Dear Resurrection Family,

As we head into a new year, it's easy to begin thinking about the circumstances we want to change, the things we want to accomplish, the habits we want to quit, or start. But, what if instead of trying to change external factors, we set out instead to let Christ transform the way we trust Him in the midst of our circumstances, no matter what they may be?

As I've been reflecting on my time with the children of ResKidz this past year, I realize that, although it is my job to teach them, often it is the other way around; I wind up learning so much from them as they teach me what true FAITH looks like.

When I think of all the precious little faces that I see every Sunday morning, Mark 10:15  always comes to mind: "I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."  I see this child-like faith that Jesus is talking about in this verse every time I interact with our kids, and it challenges me to have that same faith. Children are so quick to trust with complete abandon, never doubting that they will have their needs provided for, never questioning that they are loved.

What if I headed into this new year with my main focus on having a more "child-like" faith? What if instead of questioning our circumstances and whether God really has our best interest at heart, and instead of worrying about how our needs will be met and how we will get everything accomplished, what if we choose to imitate the faith that I see in the ResKidz children? A faith that trusts that God's love for us is enough, a faith that knows that whatever our circumstances are, and however this year goes, God has plans to bring each of us a "hope and a future" as He promises in Jeremiah 29:11.

So, here's to trusting God with complete abandon...

New Year's Resolution: Live with a child-like faith

This Sunday's Scripture Readings:

Preaching Text: John 1:1-18

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.

3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

6 There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.

10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God- 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'" 16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.
