Greetings!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! 2011 is behind us now with all its triumphs, challenges and disappointments. Looking ahead to 2012, the future looks no less mixed. But here at the Broad Street Regeneration Initiative, our main business is optimism. So let's take only a quick look back and then charge full steam ahead into a new year full of all sorts of possibilities!

Micro-Enterprise Grant Program Hands out $15k in One Day

MEGP
From time to time - especially around Christmas time it seems - it actually is possible to get what you want. Since I began working on this project back in August, nothing has occupied my wishes quite as much as the Micro-Enterprise Grant Program. This program was begun almost three years ago with the intent of helping struggling businesses pay for the kinds of aesthetic improvements the Regeneration Initiative had envisioned. Well, three years and one Great Recession later and much of that scope has changed.

Central Falls Food Pantry 2012 Food Drive

Pedros_Sign

The holidays may be behind us, but winter is just getting started.  And for thousands of people still struggling with a brutal economy,  it could mean long months of agonizing decisions. Some of these decisions - like whether to heat your home or put food on the table - should never have to be made.

For those of us fortunate enough to not have to make those kind of decisions, local organizations are offering ways to help us give back. Progreso Latino is stepping up its efforts this month to resupply the Community Food Pantry. This year's food drive is in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and labor activist Csar Chvez. If you would like to participate, please follow the link below for more information.

Business of the Month

Pedros_SignPedro's Family Barber Shop

Pedro Rodriguez may be new in Cumberland, but he's certainly not new to the hairstyling industry. Pedro started more than three years ago on Broad Street in Central Falls. Since then he's branched out on his own, bringing his upscale salon experience to his local family barber shop.

What they're trying to build is an establishment is as much a community space as it is a barber shop.  Community, he told us, is exactly what drew him to Cumberland in the first place. Pedro found Cumberland to be "a nice quiet community...and the perfect place to develop our business." His new space is fitted with multiple styling and washing stations, a flat screen tv to entertain the kids and plenty of room to grow. Pedro told us that he'll even be looking into the possibility of installing a kitchen.  With his ever growing list of clients, Pedro is well on his way to turning his dream of a family and community centered establishment into reality.

New Customers,  receive introductory pricing starting at ONLY $10!!

Property of the Month

Pedros_Sign464 Broad Street

Once the site of the city's first car lot, this property is full of history. With more than 4,000 sq. ft. of available space and some of the most distinctive looks of any building in the district, this property is begging to be brought back to life as a retail space, a cafe or just about any venture you can imagine.
