Greetings!

November is here and the weather is finally starting to turn! Hopefully you've had as fun and productive an October as we've had. Train rides, events, major pieces of legislation - oh my! And November is promising to be no less hectic. So let's not dawdle. It's getting cold in here.

**NEWS**
NHC Closer to National Park Status

Great news from the National Park Services website!!

"On October 13, 2011 bills were filed in both the United States Senate and House to "establish the John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park." The Senate bill was introduced by Senators Jack Reed (D-RI), John Kerry (D-MA), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), and Scott Brown (R-MA). The House bill was introduced by Representatives David Cicilline (D-RI), Richard E. Neal (D-MA), James McGovern (D-MA), and James Langevin (D-RI).

Following the recommendations of extensive input from local stakeholders and historians, the new multi-site park would encompass land in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts, including the Blackstone River and its tributaries; the Blackstone Canal; the non-contiguous nationally significant historic districts of Old Slater Mill in Pawtucket; the villages of Slatersville (in North Smithfield) and Ashton (in Cumberland) Rhode Island; and Whitinsville (in Northbridge) and Hopedale in Massachusetts."

This would establish one of the longest national parks in the northeast and give permanent recognition to the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor. For more information, click through to the NPS website!

Tri-City Arts District Under Development!

October saw the first meeting between the BSRI and the three
communities on the Broad Street Corridor. The purpose of this meeting? To begin development of what promised to be one of the lo ngest contiguous arts districts in the state. The district, running from Main St. in Pawtucket to Mendon Road in Cumberland (and possibly beyond) will offer tax breaks and other incentives for the production and sale of original works of art along Broad Street. These districts have shown to encourage investment and economic development in communities as diverse as Pawtucket, Providence and Newport among others.

Cumberland intends to push the boundaries of this district along Broad Street, including the Anne and Hope building and other mills and will stretch as far as the intersection of Mendon Rd and 295. Central Falls meanwhile is pushing to include the entire mile square city within the district. Once the borders are drawn, the committee will be meeting with its General Assembly delegation to discuss strategies for implementation on the state level. Stay tuned for further developments!

Community Meeting at Progreso Latino!

Progreso Latino is holding a community meeting on the city bankruptcy and the future of Central Falls on Tuesday Nov. 1st. From Progreso Latino's flyer:

"Since the closings of the public library and the community center this summer, a group of Central Falls residents has been meeting regularly to discuss the future of our city. We are concerned that decisions are being made about us without us, and we want to make sure that people who live in Central Falls are informed about changes that affect us and involved in the process."
