Greetings!

It's fall again! As we're dusting off our hats and coats, bracing for the cooler weather, we're also prepping for the last big events of 2011. My Broad Street and Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful are celebrating the season at the Central Falls Landing (see Featured Article for more) while the Tourism Council is readying the rails for their autumn and winter train tours. And all the while Pam and Ron are hard at work making sure the projects of the Broad Street Regeneration Initiative are running and on time. We've got a lot to cover so read on!

The Parks of Broad Street
Changes and Improvements in the Works for Broad Street's Historic Parks

The parks of Broad Street are perhaps some of the most often overlooked resources along the corridor. From the tower at Jenks Park, to the mill run of Valley Falls, the parks of Broad Street are spots for relaxation and reflection on the shared heritage of the Blackstone Valley. However, many of our parks have not fared well over the years. Signs have faded and access as deteriorated. Fortunately, the value of these parks has not been forgotten. The Broad Street Regeneration Initiative has partnered with the Tourism Council and the Town of Cumberland to help reinvigorate Valley Falls Heritage Park with new signage and a new plan for future maintenance. Chris Caricicfero and the rest of the Cumberland planning department are taking the lead on a new plan to improve visitor experiences now and into the future. At the same time Central Falls has continued its improvement work in Jenks Park. Topping the list of improvements is repainting of the historic umbrella pavilions and rebuilding access to Cogswell Tower, still one of the best views in the Blackstone Valley. In addition to this, October will see the start of what we hope will be a new tradition. On Saturday, the 15th, the BSRI will join with Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful for a day of music, food and river sports to celebrate the river and raise funds to support KBVB's mission. We at the BSRI are looking forward to supporting these and other efforts to ensure that the parks of Broad Street will continue to provide opportunities for entertainment and education for years to come.

State Reps Tout Post-Irene Assistance
Available Assistance for Broad Street Businesses and Residents Affected by Irene

Last month, many Broad Street businesses were directly impacted by the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. State Senator Elizabeth Crowley, State Representative Jim McLaughlin and representatives from state, local and federal governments held community meetings to assess the impacts and inform residents of the help available to them. My Broad Street was honored to be a part of that discussion. Through these sessions we gathered a wealth of information, including available benefits, limitations and contact numbers to help Broad Street businesses access these resources. Over the next week or so we will be working to get this information out to as many Broad Street businesses as we can. For details click here. In the meantime, if you have any questions or we can help in any way, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Summer Farmers Markets Ending Soon!
October is Last Month for Summer Markets

There's nothing quite like a farmer's market during harvest time. Baskets overflowing with produce that's more abundant and less expensive than at any other time of the year. Harvest time also marks your last chance to get your hands on local summer vegetables before the winter sets in. Farm Fresh RI has a great program to make sure that people at all income levels have access to fresh local food. EBT and WIC are accepted at most markets. Click the link below to check find out where the markets are in Blackstone Valley. Or go to Farm Fresh RI's website for more!
