Greetings!
We hope that Hurricane Irene was gentle with all of you, and that you and your families are all safe.
This September, please welcome our two new AmeriCorps VISTAs -- Pamela Monahagan and Ron Barron. While they are making themselves at home at BVTC & Broad Street, they would like to extend their gratitude and best wishes to last year's VISTA's, Caitlin Amos and Miles Ellison.
Pam and Ron will be serving the Broad Street Regeneration Initiative this year and are eager to continue and build on the work of our previous VISTA's. They are both interested in furthering and promoting the economic, environmental, and social health and well being on Broad Street and are looking forward to becoming a part of the Broad Street Community and BVTC Team.
If you catch them walking or biking on Broad Street, they're quite friendly, so feel free to stop them and say hello!

2011-2012 AmeriCorps VISTA Team for
The Broad Street Regeneration Initiative Project

Pamela Brown is an AmeriCorps VISTA working on the Broad Street Regeneration Initiative. She is a lifetime resident of RI and a 1996 Magna cum Laude graduate of the University of RI where she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting with minor studies in Art History and Philosophy. Upon graduating, she also received the URI Presidential Award for Academic excellence in recognition of outstanding scholarship throughout her 5 years at the University. For over 15 years, Pamela has shown her work in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and locally throughout RI. During her 2 years as an artist and resident at AS220 (1997-1999) in Providence, she discovered she has a penchant for gallery and art projects that merge art and community. Since then, she has used her artwork as a type of activism supporting organizations and causes. Pamela is certain she will enjoy learning about the vast intra-cultural history of Blackstone Valley and is especially excited to meet with local residents and business owners about how BVTC can facilitate the renaissance of Broad Street Culture and business. She can be reached at pamela.bvtc@gmail.com.
Ron Barron is originally from California but did enough growing up in Rhode Island to consider himself a native. After high school he studied audio design in San Francisco, going on to work in live music and video production. Most recently Ron worked for such diverse organizations as New York city's NYC Media group and People for Successful Korean Unification in Seoul, South Korea, all while earning his degree in social science from the State University of New York. He can be reached at ron.bvtc@gmail.com

Now that Hurricane Irene has come and gone, great effort is going into restoring power, repairing downed wires, and removing storm debris. Many residences and businesses on Broad Street are still experiencing the impact of this storm in the form of power outages, and shortages of water, food, and gasoline. While some Broad Street Businesses were luckier than others, many demonstrated a stoic resilience and quite a few shops were open Monday despite the loss of power. We hope that you were able to stay safe during this trying weather. All things considered, there's still a lot out there to do, see, buy, eat and drink on Broad Street. Be sure to stop by the Dominican Restaurant and say hola! - They still have power, electricity, and great authentically Dominican fare! Also, don't forget to 'like' us on Facebook and visit our website often to stay informed on what's happening in the area.
Sincerely,
Pam and Ron

Many folks came out walking, biking, or driving along Broad Street to survey the damage on the Monday after Irene's visit. Many stores experienced power outages throughout Broad Street. Signs proclaiming "No Electricity" were a common sight.
