August 2011

broad street e-news header
Greetings!

August is going to be a time of transition for the Broad Street Regeneration Initiative as Caitlin Amos, our current AmeriCorps VISTA, passes the torch to two new volunteers who will be serving until August 2012. After completing her year of service, Caitlin is heading across the pond to attend the London School of Economics where she will receive her MSc in City Design and Social Policy. She is thankful for the opportunity to work and be a part of the Broad Street community and looks forward to seeing what's to come.

Celebrating the Blackstone to the Bay Bikeway Connection

On July 11th, we celebrated the completion of the the Blackstone the Bay Bikeway Connection with an inaugural ride of the on-street route. Over 35 people came out to ride with us and over 70 people participated in the event. The bike train started in East Providence with a formal ribbon cutting, followed by a ride along Blackstone Boulevard, then the Blackstone Valley Visitor Center in Pawtucket and finally to the beginning of the Blackstone River Bikeway on Jones Street in Cumberland.

Passing the Torch - An Introduction to the new VISTAS
pamelab

Pamela Brown is an AmeriCorps VISTA working on the Broad Street Regeneration Initiative. She is a lifetime resident of RI and a 1996 Magna cum Laude graduate of the University of RI where she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting with minor studies in Art History and Philosophy. Upon graduating, she also received the URI Presidential Award for Academic excellence in recognition of outstanding scholarship throughout her 5 years at the University. For over 15 years, Pamela has shown her work in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and locally throughout RI.  During her 2 years as an artist and resident at AS220 (1997-1999) in Providence, she discovered she has a penchant for gallery and art projects that merge art and community. Since then, she has used her artwork as a type of activism supporting organizations and causes. Pamela is certain she will enjoy learning about the vast intra-cultural history of Blackstone Valley and is especially excited to meet with local residents and business owners about how BVTC can facilitate the renaissance of Broad Street Culture and business. She can be reached at pamela.bvtc@gmail.com.
