Greetings!
Welcome to spring! I think we are all pretty happy to put this unexpectedly snowy winter behind us and look ahead to long days and warm nights. This past month we've seen partnerships bloom throughout the community and we must say that we are loving the collaborative work that's happening!  Check out what's going on:

Spring Cleaning
Central Falls Councilman of Ward 4, James Diossa, sweeping at the clean up on Saturday April 23.
On Saturday April 23, the cities of Pawtucket and Central Falls held city-wide clean ups for Earth Day weekend. In Pawtucket, volunteers gathered at Galego Court early in the morning and in Central Falls they met at the high school gymnasium.

City Councilman of Ward 4, James Diossa, took his hand at cleaning, too. In Central Falls, where -- despite the rain -- over 150 volunteers showed up, he helped clean up the most trafficked streets, including Broad Street.

"This event was great because it brought businesses, residents, teachers, students and alumni from Central Falls high school together." Diossa said. "People were donating food, supplies and water; it was just great," he added.
The Bikeway Connector is Scheduled for Completion

The Blackstone Valley Bike Stripe is currently in its final planning and pre-construction stages.  The project went out to bid in March and a contractor has been chosen.  Led by the City of Pawtucket's Planning Department, each municipality has been working out the final design and placement decisions of the on-road sharrows.  Without unexpected delays, the installation should begin within the next month.  In a related story, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation is going to bid on their portion (parts 1B and 2) of the Blackstone Valley Bikeway.  This will include bike lanes and on road markings in Providence and Pawtucket.  The RIDOT piece should begin construction in 2011.  Together the Bikestripe and RIDOT phase 1B and 2 will link the East Bay Bike Path and Blackstone Valley bikeway.  Funding for the Bikestripe now includes sources from: the RI Dept of Energy Resources, KeepSpace, and the John H Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor.
Local Salon Receives Micro-Enterprise Grant Funding

A few weeks ago, the Broad Street Regeneration Initiative in partnership with the Cumberland Planning Department agreed to disperse $10,000 in Micro-Enterprise grant funds to Lucrecia Rubio, business owner of Russel's Beauty Supply in Central Falls. The salon, which specializes in hair coloring, styling, and heat treatments, has been operating on Broad Street for the past 13 years. This award will be used to purchase a fresh coat of paint and do some remodeling; she will also receive advertising in America News, working capital and inventory. Congratulations, Lucrecia!
