When I married my husband 14 years ago, my aunt thought I was doing it to make a political statement.  It's a common reaction to interracial marriage.  Because it has so long been taboo, people tend to immediately start looking for something that will explain it.  There seems to be a deep need to attribute it to some darker motivation, like the need to make a political statement or to rebel against society, than to the force that draws all couples together: love.
Making a political statement? Nothing could have been farther from the truth.  When I fell in love with Herb Everett, I was terrified - by what my family would say, by the fear of how both friends and strangers would treat us, and by my own feelings.  Like many who grew up in the waning days of the Jim Crow South, I was raised to think that interracial relationships were not just wrong, but an abomination...
