Make Simple Technology Work for You With Improved Efficiency and Lower Cost
By Ellen Schlosser, HRIS Consultant, The HR Group, Inc.

Ellen SchlosserAfter months of working with your executive team, you have finally convinced them that increasing diversity in the management ranks is a worthwhile investment.

They agree to increase women in management by 10 percent over the next three years.

The immediate question to answer is:  How many women are in management today?

With your human resources data sources, are you able to produce a report in the next ten minutes that creates the baseline for that objective? Do you have this information in an organized, electronic format or do you have to read through individual paper files in order to compile the data?

What if the objective is to improve the average education level of management employees? Do you have, at your fingertips, the ability to report the percentage of managers with college degrees so you can measure improvements?

A Human Resources Information System can do more for an organization than keep track of employees' titles and their rates of pay. It can benefit the organization by enhancing decision-making quality and speed, improving the accuracy and availability of data, and enabling more effective employee communications.

As the demand for more strategic level contributions from Human Resources leaders grows, organizations are looking to technology to increase administrative efficiencies in HR.

For example, one source reports that organizations that implement self-service can reduce the cost and cycle time for transactions by more than 50%. The ability to have immediate access to information improves employee satisfaction and reduces the administrative workload in busy Human Resources departments, especially when it comes to tasks that involve completing paperwork, filing reports, and updating benefits information.

Due to developments in web-based systems technologies and the ability to provide secure access, companies can implement an HRIS with an up-front investment of only a few thousand dollars and can be operational in a matter of several weeks.

Ongoing software service fees can be significantly less than ten dollars per employee per month and include the cost of maintaining the software and backing up the data.

The support required by internal IS staff is minimal, generally confined to providing secure employee access to the company's intranet.
