Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009

HRCI Approved SupplierBy now, I'm sure you have at least heard of Lilly Ledbetter and the Fair Pay Act that was signed into law on January 29, 2009.  What does that mean to companies?
 
Basically it eliminates the old rule of employees having to file a claim of discrimination within 180 days.  Each time an employee gets a paycheck it starts a new 180 days, so this Act allows an individual to bring discrimination claims many years after an alleged act of discrimination occurred.  Lilly Ledbetter's claim was based on gender; however, the Ledbetter Act will extend the statute of limitations for filing claims for all protected classes which includes gender, age, color, disability, race, religion and national origin.  The Act is retroactive to May 28, 2007 and applies to all pay discrimination claims pending on or after that date.
