Blessing the Animals
The Blessing of the Animals is a tradition that dates back to St. Francis of Assisi in the early thirteenth century. St. Francis, the patron saint of animals and the environment, is one of the most popular saints in the world, the one who preached to birds, blessed fish and, according to tradition, brokered a deal between a ferocious wolf and the citizens of a terrified town.
Pet Blessings are usually held around the feast day of St. Francis on October 4 to emphasize that creation includes more than humankind.
You can find a listing of many of the pet blessing events held in the Diocese of Southern Ohio in our online pet blessing calendar. You can also add your event by clicking on the link at the bottom of the calendar, or by emailing information to Julie Murray at jmurray@diosohio.org.
SEND us your pictures! We'll post them online and/or in Interchange. Deadline: Oct. 9. Send to them to rthompson@diosohio.org |

Homework Club needs volunteers
The newest Homework Club of the Diocesan Ministerio Latino is accepting applications from volunteers to work with preschoolers in Price Hill, while their older siblings do homework at the library on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Volunteers may complete the online Safe Church training at their convenience. It is possible to volunteer for one afternoon a week or every other week. Activities will include outdoor play, serving snacks, reading stories, singing, counting and alphabet games and some interaction with those parent volunteers who do not have to leave early for night shift work.

| Orientation to Leadership for In the Garden
After more than 5 years, In the Garden, the weekly worship and dinner at Trinity on Capitol Square, Columbus, has grown into a popular and respected part of the programs for the downtown Columbus homeless and minimally-housed individuals.
We now serve an average of 120 persons each Sunday afternoon with a delicious, hot home-cooked meal, programs and worship. Many in the community (led by Sister and Dave with a host of volunteers from the ITG community) have begun to take responsibility for the set-up and clean-up each Sunday, as well as parts of the worship (led by the Rev. Deniray Mueller) and organization. We have been blessed by participation from All Saints, New Albany, St. John's, Worthington, and St. Philip's Columbus, as well the Church of the Solid Faith.
Several civic groups take turns providing meals as well; among them are the Chick 4 Christ, the Linda Jones Piano Studio and the Grove City High School Key Club. The OSU Muslim Student Association brings sack lunches each Sunday for ITG folks to take home for supper, and often stay to help serve as well. Retired lawyer Jane Perry (formerly with the Ohio Public Defenders office) comes monthly to advise our ITG folks on legal matters, especially dealing with state organizations. We have three members of the community graduate from the Columbus State Logistics Arts program and two currently enrolled in IMPACT, which assists in getting and retaining employment.
In the Garden has indeed become a thriving community where not only food and worship are shared, but prayers, concerns, successes, and friendships, and certainly ITG has become a reciprocal ministry to those of us who are closely involved. Because ITG is such a large part of the outreach ministry of Trinity Church, and because some have expressed an interest in volunteering, we will hold an "Orientation to Leadership for In The Garden" on Sunday morning, Oct, 28 at 9:15 a.m. in the Undercroft. During this hour we will explain how ITG works, what volunteering involves, and answer questions.
Please plan to join us to learn more about this large and multi-faceted ministry of Trinity Church (125 East Broad Street, Columbus) and how YOU can be a part of it! |
Cincinnati State of the City Environment Forum
Cincinnati State of the City Environment Forum Wednesday October 10, 6 to 8 p.m. Northside Tavern 4163 Hamilton Ave.
Building on the success of last year's city council candidate forum, the environment forum will lay out Cincinnati's environmental accomplishments and goals and provide a chance for city councilmembers to engage with the environmental voters who elected them.
Council members Roxanne Qualls (a member of Christ Church Cathedral), Laure Quinlivan, P.G. Sittenfeld, Wendell Young (a member of St. Andrew's Cincinnati), Chris Seelbach and Yvette Simpson will be joined by Office of Environmental Quality chief Larry Falkin to answer questions from the audience, which will be vetted by University of Cincinnati environmental studies students. Ann Thompson, a reporter with local NPR affiliate WVXU, will moderate. Neil Seldman, co-founder and President of the Institute for Local Self Reliance will present information about how other communities have worked toward sending zero waste to their landfills and take audience questions about how Cincinnati can improve its waste recovery rate. He will be joined by Fia Cifuentes, Sustainability Coordinator for the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, who will share the zoo's zero waste efforts. |
How to prevent or intervene in bullying
General Convention passed a resolution (D022) calling for church-wide partnerships to end bullying. Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio is offering workshops in Cincinnati on Oct. 18 and Dayton on Oct. 26 for a discounted fee of $30. Lunch and snacks are included. Counselors and social workers can earn 6 CEU's. The full-day workshop will provide you with the tools you need to minimize bullying and its impact for the youth in your community. It will be led by Melissa Meyer, a highly skilled and respected educator and trainer, who is Vice President of the Ohio Board of Nursing. The Cincinnati meeting will be held at the Health Foundation, 3805 Edwards Road, and the Dayton meeting at the Miami Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 8690 Yankee Street. Register at www.ppswo.org. |
