Audit deadline quickly approaching

Just a gentle reminder that congregational audits are due to the finance office by September 1. Auditors should use the December 31, 2011 treasurer prepared financial statements and agree all numbers back to the filed 2011 parochial report.  Any revisions to the parochial report must be sent to the finance office, by September 1, as revisions could affect the Mission Share calculation.  No Mission Share calculations will be changed after September 1 due to parochial report revisions.

If there are any concerns or questions regarding this procedures, please do not hesitate to contact David Robinson at DRobinson@diosohio.org  or Angela Byrd at AByrd@diosohio.org  or call 800.582.1712. Thank you.

Do you have the wRite Stuff? wRite Stuff logo

The second annual wRite Stuff congregation newsletter competition is now accepting entries for the 2012 awards.

The competition has divisions for both printed and electronic newsletters, with multiple categories within each division. Independent judges will assess the entries and award the gold, silver or bronze Quill to the outstanding entries in each category. Anyone who contributes to a congregation's newsletter (ie. editor, priest, volunteer writer) is eligible to enter their work. Winners will be announced at the annual diocesan convention in November.

The wRite Stuff offers an opportunity not only for church communicators to show off their hard work but also for getting valuable feedback on how to improve communications at your church. Judges are asked to provide critical evaluations of all entries, not just the winners. And winning entries with some judges' comments will be on display at convention for gathering ideas to improve your own newsletter.

The competition covers communications for the "program year" of September 2011 to June 2012. The deadline for entries is September 10. Entry requirements and entry forms can be found at http://www.diosohio.org/dfc/newsdetail_2/3153784

Mail entries to Julie Murray at Diocesan House, 412 Sycamore Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202. Entries must be received by Sept. 10 and will not be returned. Winning entries will be displayed at convention. Direct any questions to Julie Murray at jmurray@diosohio.org or 800.582.1712, ext. 110.

SOLLI signup going on now!

Southern Ohio Lay Leadersip Initiative (SOLLI) co-coordinator Bill Ubbes wants to know:

Do you want to learn how to become an effective leader in communities of faith, on vestries and bishop's committees, and in service to the diocese?
Do you want to acquire the background information to facilitate responsible decision making in the church?
Do you want your volunteer commitments and leadership to be grounded in scripture, prayer, and the Anglican tradition of lay ministry?
Do you feel called to offer yourself in leadership?
Do you want to represent the Anglican position helpfully in ecumenical and interfaith cooperative efforts?
Do you want to understand and exercise the ministry which is yours as a baptized Christian in our Episcopal Church?

Then SOLLI is for you!
Effective leadership can empower common ministry and mission.  SOLLI is one place to discover and experience a diocesan-wide opportunity for leadership development.

SOLLI is a two-year program. Each year includes three two-night weekends (Friday evening through Sunday).  Participants focus on leadership and learning goals, and make a commitment to form a mutually responsible learning community accountable to one another. Our life and work together are shaped by scripture, prayer, and reflection. The SOLLI experience includes:
* Training in congregational leadership
* Practices of prayer and Bible study
* Knowledge of the Anglican tradition and our place within it
* Knowledge of the people and programs of the diocese
* Deepening a commitment to peace and justice
* Engagement in interfaith and ecumenical relationships
* Training in group dynamics and process

Candidates are recommended for SOLLI either by their clergy, other SOLLI members, or by self-nomination.  Nominees may download the application form here and mail it in, complete the application online, or contact the Canon for Formation for additional information on the application process.

All seafarers can identify with the Irish fisherman's prayer that includes the words: "the sea is so wide, and my boat is so small." And when natural environment and personal circumstances seem to engulf their world, that's when mariners turn to the women and men of Seamen's Church Institute for help.
