Valentines Day?
|
 |
February 14 is Valentines Day, the day on which we celebrate and
explore love in all it's many ideals. How a day for lovers came to be
celebrated during the middle of February is an interesting and ages old
story. The story of Valentines Day begins during the heyday of the
Roman Empire, which held a festival every February. This Lupercian
Festival was held in honor of the God of Fertility and during the
festivities young men would get to choose their mate. At the time marriage was a common occurrence but when Claudis became Emperor he stopped all that. Fearing that men would refuse to fight because they would not want to leave their wives behind, he outlawed all marriages. Young couples still wanted to marry though and they took these desires to the Catholic Bishop Valentine who,
understanding love, began to secretly marry couples. When Claudius
found out, he had Valentine arrested and ordered put to death. While
waiting in jail, Valentine began exchanging letters with the jailer's
daughter and soon had fallen in love with her. The day he was to be
beheaded, he wrote her one last note and signed it: " From Your
Valentine." In 496 A.D. Christianity had taken over Rome and Pope Gelasius
outlawed the pagan Lupercian Festival. Knowing it's popularity, he
looked to replace it with something more appropriate and set aside a
day in February to honor the martyr St. Valentine. Even though in 1969
the church removed St. Valentines Day from it's calendar of 'official' holidays, it is still widely celebrated today.

The True Meaning Of This Season
In the article to the left, you can read about how Valentine's Day began. Yet, there are still deeper meanings lingering behind Valentines and the month of February. This time was originally celebrated as the first beginnings of spring, the actual date when the winter's temperature starts rising, halfway between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. The actual day of celebration in the old traditions is called Candlemas and occurs around February 2nd. It is also known as Brigid, for the Celtic Goddess of fire and inspiration. In the Hopi version, Powamu, bean plants are grown in the kivas as the promise of new green to come. Valentine's Day, Groundhog Day and the Chinese New Year are outgrowths of this Sabbat. In the deepest cold of winter, the spring is born and nurtured. Candlemas is a time of light, inspiration, poetry, creativity, the nine muses and graces, smithcraft, healing, dedication and initiation.
Why is this a time for love and lovers? Because love is the energy that makes for a beautiful spring. Who does not love spring? Who does not like to be in love?
So next time, you are thinking that Valentines Day is just a Hallmark Card day, see deeper into this time and welcome your own creativity, inspiration, healing, initiation and love into the tender beginnings of spring.

A Love ExperimentDo you know what happens when you send a loving thought to someone or something? The recipient gets some good energy. The receiver will literally expand in its vibration. All beings respond to the energy of love even if we do not see the affects immediately; plants, animals, people, even inanimate objects infused with the thoughts of love and spoken kindly too, will respond in kind. It is all energy.
This month make an intention to focus on Love. Practice loving what you have, where and who you are in your life and who you are sharing life with - even for just a momentary passing.
Love is the energy that opens up - expands, gives and receives. Love is creation manifest. Love is not just a 4 letter word. Spring is the energy of love. Love your neighbor. Love yourself. Love your life. Love as much as you can for the next month and see what starts to grow in your life. Make an intention to open more to love this spring.
With love and forever blessings,
