September 2009
Welcome to the second issue of Run Rocklin News!
Fall is a great time to run - cooler weather (what happened to the cool 80's?), many organized races to choose from (check out our list!), and more free time for some of us with the kids in school. If you live in Rocklin, or in the surrounding areas, we are bringing you valuable information regarding health and wellness, new running routes to try - and updates on the new programs and services we will be unveiling! In this issue, learn about fueling your young soccer or tennis player ... and meet Andy Powell, a community runner. Interested in trying out a 10K using your Nike+ system? Look below for more information. We hope you enjoy our newsletter where the focus is to help create a strong running community. |

| I Run Rocklin, do you? |
A Rocklin tradition One of the largest running events in our region, Run Rocklin is coming back for its seventh year. Promoting health, wellness, community spirit and of course the Matt Redding Foundation - Run Rocklin will see our 7th year in 2010.
Still growing With more participants and more supporters each year, this event has donated over $40,000 to our community during the last 6 years with approximately 6,500 participants. For 2010, we are adding more year-round features like a monthly newsletter, the i Run Rocklin program, and even looking into adding a 1/2 marathon distance! As any runner knows, you must keep challenging the status quo.

| Fueling our Active Youth |
By Kendra Cendana, B.S. Exercise Science, Sports Nutrition Specialist www.fitchixbootcamp.com
We are a community of busy and athletic adults who have children who are equally as active. We feed ourselves right and try to set a good example but why do we so often see kids fueling up at fast food restaurants or showing up to practices and games on an empty stomach. It is important to provide proper nutrition and hydration to these young athletes as they sweat it out on the fields and courts of our community.

| I Run Rocklin ... meet Andy Powell |
Name: Andy Powell Age - 42 Daughter - Kaylee Started running at age 24
Run alone or with a group? Usually run with a group, I like to have the motivating factors of running with people faster and slower than me. There is a certain bonding and relationship that happens when running with people. I happen to workout everyday with my running partners at Fitness MD and we have grown to appreciate each other's company.
Do you cross-train? I cross-train at Fitness MD with the same people I enjoy running with.
What is your favorite training run? Our group usually meets at the Starbucks off Lonetree Blvd by the RC Wiley. Our "easy"/"short" run is up Lonetree past Strikes, east on Sunset, South on Park (usually a guy holding a pizza sign on the corner teasing us), then back to Fairway/Lonetree. After the run we enjoy a little coffee and rest.
Who would you like to run with and why? I know it sounds cliche, but there's nobody else I'd rather run with. The group from Fitness MD I currently run with is the best group I've ever run with. I've been part of a lot of different running clubs when I was training for Boston (the first time), but this is by far the best group. There's no competition, everybody is supportive, and everybody looks out for one another.
What is your power food? My power food before my run is usually oatmeal, but a beer post run is always something to look forward to, although my trainers would disagree.
-- Thank you Dave for participating in the first spotlight interview! We will see you pounding the pavement at Lonetree and Sunset ... or at the local coffee hut.

Article by Mike Wood CPT, CFT, CSN www.fitnessmdonline.com
It's that time of year again. The sun is bright, spirits are high, the stars are aligned, and the setting is just right for an endorphin filled run or fitness program to jump start your life. During the summer months many of us are really starting to pay attention to our waist lines. Pondering the right way to go about shrinking it down and displaying some well earned abs. The disappointing news is that there is no easy way to do this. No magic pill. No crash diet. No quick fix. It takes good old fashioned hard work. The good news is that is doesn't have to be a complicated science project to achieve the results that you want. My momma always said to, "Keep it simple". Remember this: if everything in life were easy, there would be nothing worth earning.
