January Calendar Updates

Some items were overlooked on our January calendar so please add these items to your January calendar:  January 16th is an in-service day for the teachers so there is NO SCHOOL for the students and January 31st is a half day for the students due to parent-teacher conferences which begin in the afternoon.

Still in that Giving Spirit?

Well, how about signing up to do more playground or lunch duties?  We are really short in January and February for the playground duty. The lunch room could use some help in February and May. Please contact the office if there is a day that you could help out with. Thank you.

Our School Community

Two Saint Mary's Visitation Alumni  Making a Difference in the World

by : Emme Wiederhold '12, Molly Carrig '12, Alexandra Ahrens '12

SMV recently welcomed back two young alumni and members of the military, Ellen Chamberlin and Mark Bodalski,  who addressed students on the December 21 " 5:11 Day."   Ellen, a 2006 graduate of SMV, is a second year cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point.  Mark, also a 2006 SMV graduate, is a sophomore at the University of Miami in Florida, where he participates in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) for the US Air Force.

Ellen told the students how she was first inspired to join the military when she was in fourth grade at Saint Mary's,  after watching the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Ellen recalled that the discipline and Catholic values she learned at SMV are much like those demanded by her life in the military.  Mark commented, "The Air Force is a great way for me to give back to God and my country." They both feel that the military is a great option for them to get an education and serve their country. For the current students, the alumni presentation was a valuable opportunity to see ways to further their education and  to give back to the community.  According to eighth grade student Luke Moyer, "It was a very enlightening experience, and I was inspired by the selflessness of the alumni."

SMV Fourth Graders Share their Artwork with the World!

Move Over Famous Artists! St. Mary's Visitation artists are taking over the spotlight! SMV has teamed up with Artsonia, www.artsonia.com -- the world's largest online kid's art museum -- to display the students' artwork.

Anyone can view the school gallery online at: www.artsonia.com/schools/StMarys225. Visitors can browse the artwork in the school gallery by grade level, or by specific exhibits. St. Mary's Visitation students join thousands of students from over 130 countries whose artwork is showcased on Artsonia. This program is a wonderful way to get parents and family members more involved in Art Education.

All of Artsonia's artwork (12 million and counting!) are viewable online, and any teacher or parent can create an online art gallery for their child or school. Artsonia provides several online features such as fan clubs and personal guestbooks, as a way for families to encourage the creativity and imaginations of their young artists. In addition, family members can purchase keepsakes imprinted with the child's artwork, with Artsonia donating 15 percent of their annual product revenue back to school art programs.

Headquartered in Gurnee, IL, Artsonia was established in 2000 as an online kid's art museum providing free, educational resources for kids, families and schools to create art projects. Since its inception, Artsonia continues to integrate technology in the classroom, develop multi-cultural understanding through art and increase family involvement in children's education. To find out more, visit www.artsonia.com.
