WFES - Masdar Institute Theater Main Exhibition Hall ESIA Report "Sunrise in the Desert" Solar power becomes competitive in the Middle East" Sponsored by PwC- Is solar power too expensive? Not competitive against MENA's cheap and abundant gas and oil? Only viable with heavy subsidies? On the contrary - this report shows how dramatic falls in the cost of solar power, rising MENA energy demand, and high oil and gas prices are intersecting to make solar power an economically compelling part of electricity generation. This has important implications for the future of regional economies, their ability to increase hydrocarbon exports and to hit ambitious targets for renewable energy use. * How to develop renewable energy - Power Engineering 01/02/2012 - The Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region cannot be treated in uniform fashion; there are differences in natural resources across the jurisdictions and varying policy drivers for pursuing renewable energy development.
* 10 per cent of Jordan's power to come from renewables by 2020. - Utilities-me.comThe Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan currently spends a fifth of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on imported energy. Largely due to energy bills, the country's budget deficit for the first half of 2011 climbed 55 percent to US$366 million (AED1.34 billion) up from US$235.1 million (AED864 million) for the same period last year. Frequent disruptions to gas supplies from neighboring countries have threatened Jordan's strategic energy supply raising the costs further by US$3 million dollars (AED11 million) a day from having to utilize more expensive fuel sources.

* Renewable energy in Saudi Arabia - Norton Rose - 01/2012 -
With its vast landscape, featuring "empty stretches of desert that can host solar arrays and vast deposits of clear sand that can be used in the manufacture of silicon photovoltaic cells"3 and benefiting from approximately 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, Saudi Arabia is highly suited to the development of solar energy. Saudi Aramco forecasts that the cost of solar production will halve to $0.10 per kWh in the period 2010-20 in the GCC, making it cheaper than diesel-fired generation and placing it on a par with gas * ME 'can become top renewable energy exporter' - TradeArabia - 01/09/2012 - The Middle East region can become a major exporter of the renewable energy thanks to the abundance of year-round sunlight as well as pockets of geothermal activity, said a solar energy expert. The potential for this infinite resource in the region is vast, explained Vahid Fotuhi, chairman of the Emirates Solar Industry Association. "We have all the ingredients we need to make renewable energy a success in the Middle East," he noted. * The solar shakeout, and what to expect in 2012 - pv magazine - 01/11/2012 - With bankruptcies an unwanted but increasingly common feature of the photovoltaic landscape, questions abound as to what to expect from 2012.
