1. ESIA in the News - UAE : As the summer heat kicks into force in the UAE, there is growing concern that we will once again start witnessing pockets of power shortages across the region. The UAE already has one of the highest levels of per capita energy consumption in the world (12 MWh/yr). As the country grows, so will the trend towards higher power consumption. In Dubai alone, some 50 towers are still without electricity. And there are still more buildings on the way. DEWA expects that in 2011 demand will grow between 7-9%. In the Northern Emirates, there are an estimated 300 towers currently waiting for electricity. This has led to tension between the government and developers. 2. Solar Energy News Brief- - Major Asia Pacific Photovoltaic Markets to Reach 26% of Global Demand by 2015 - Asia Pacific photovoltaic markets are set to grow rapidly and are projected to account for approximately one-quarter of global demand by 2015, up from 11% in 2010,
- Pricing distortions have allowed buildings - and entire cities - to be built without regard for energy efficiency. Unrestrained consumption has, in turn, handed the Gulf states the embarrassing position of leading the world in per capita emissions of greenhouse gases. It has also created the impetus for action. Policy options for GCC governments - Jim Krane (Dubia School of Government).
- Europe's emission scheme likely to cost Emirates $1b.Carbon permit fees will impact margins for 8-10 years, airline says. Andrew Parker, senior vice-president of public, industry, international and environmental affairs at Emirates, said the Dubai carrier will be hit by a new carbon emission permit scheme applicable to airlines flying to Europe from 2012.

FT: Clouds over solar energy sector: Barely a year ago, there appeared little prospect for consolidation in the global solar industry, which was enjoying a boom from strong demand from European markets such as Italy and Germany.
With new installations more than doubling last year to make solar a $60bn market, "everyone is still too busy making money for consolidation", one analyst said at the time. But the situation has changed over the past six months.
- Solar Photovoltaic Inverters For Smart Grid, Energy-Storage Applications Gaining Ground. Shipments of the latest generation of "smart" solar photovoltaic inverters are forecast to grow to 27 GW in 2015, accounting for almost 60% of the market, according to a recent report from IMS Research.
- Robin Mills "Steps Saudi Arabia must take to stretch its resources further."
"If something cannot go on forever, it will stop," as the noted economist Herbert Stein said. This epigram applies very well to Saudi Arabia's perilous long-term fiscal situation, analysed in a recent report from the investment bank Jadwa.
- PV Technology News - Removing the Rare Element Shackles from Solar Energy. Despite the challenges, the global market for solar PV technology is growing very rapidly. Some analysts predicting solar PV could contribute as much as 10-15% of our global electricity by 2050.
- Dubai freezes price of power and water - The decision represents a U-turn from its warning last month that increases in the cost of natural gas - which is burned to produce power and desalinate water - would be passed on to consumers.
