We're Cooking Things Up
Suzy Cooking
The Annual ICF Reception for Idyllwild is September 22, 2011.  We want you to join us for this celebration of 'giving' in Idyllwild.  Suzy Capparelli will once again be in the kitchen cooking for you.

We need your email address because we are conserving trees and dollars.  Our invitation will be sent by email only this year.  Sign up HERE.  And please let us know of friends that should receive an invitation.  We want to communicate economically.

Did you come to congratulate our grant recipients, to connect with friends and neighbors, to learn more about the Idyllwild Community Fund?  Whatever your reason, we're glad you came.  Come back this year and bring your friends.  We would love to meet them.

More Grant Applicants

We had eleven worthy 501(c)3 organizations apply for a 2011 ICF grant.

We always wish we had more to give because all of them are dedicated to serving the community of Idyllwild.  The recipients will be announced at the ICF Reception on September 22.  Join us for the celebration.

We Go On Site to Gain Insight.....

Up close and personal with our grant applicants

My favorite part of being on the ICF Advisory Board these past six years has been learning more and more about our 'giving' community through the site visits we on the board attend each year. After reviewing each application and understanding the need and cost considerations of the applicant's project, a site visit is scheduled.  That is the time to sit down with the leaders of the applicant organization and ask the important questions.  If the applicant is a prior recipient we see our grants in action and that is always exciting. Sometimes our questions and comments can fine tune a proposed project.  The entire process is thrilling!  We have chosen some examples to share with you.  Come along with me.

Art Education...... smARTS Celebrates 10 years
smARTS 2011 With the help of ICF, smARTS has brought art to Idyllwild children every Friday for 10 years. Using volunteer art teachers, minimal art supplies and a lot of imagination,  this program has proven to be outstanding.  Its success is measured by the fact that student attendance, normally down on Fridays, has improved measurably.   Here Joanne Tomsche, one of the original smARTS leaders talks to the ICF Board members about the distinctive pickets created by students.  Forget big city art projects, Idyllwild has its own public sculpture.  Take a few minutes someday and walk along this stunning installation.

Mountain Disaster Preparedness....Lighting the Way
MDP 2011 We all know that Idyllwild doesn't have a lot of street lighting.  So what happens in an emergency? The MDP group has installed and stocked Disaster Assistance Stations around the community.  Now they need to light them so citizens can easily get necessary supplies.  The group performed a nighttime drill to determine how the lighting needed to work, how much lighting was needed and where to place it for maximum effect.  If funded, the grant will benefit all of us should an emergency occur.  Here Dora Dillman, MDP volunteer explains the grant proposal to ICF board members at one of the DAS locations.

Animal Rescue Friends......fostering the unwanted

In addition to fostering art and outdoor adventures, Idyllwild has long been known as a place that welcomes and cares about animals.  ARF, founded by long time resident Jane Stonehill, is a volunteer organization that finds foster homes for animals in need.

ARF also runs Sadie's Clinic, providing low cost veterinary services to Idyllwild residents.  With help from an ICF grant, spay and neuter services will be provided to a specific number of cats and dogs in foster care.

Suzy Capparelli......an Idylwild treasure
Suzy Capparelli Our guest editor, Suzy Capparelli has lived in Idyllwild for 33 years.  She moved here with husband, Pete, from Redondo Beach.  After teaching at Gardena High School for 15 years in Theater Arts, Suzy helped begin and stayed on to teach at Morning Sky School for twenty years.  With a passion for her community, Suzy continues to be involved with the Associates of Idyllwild Arts, Local Color and ICF.  She has served as recording secretary and is completing her second and final three year term on the board.

After all site visits have occurred, the ICF board meets to discuss, and make educated and hopefully, wise decisions regarding each applicant's project and the community need it's hoping to fill.  Then our recommendations are turned over to The Community Foundation for final approval.

The site visit design involves a wonderful, cooperative process and it has always given me joy.

Sincerely,
Suzy Capparelli
