Cattle Bloat
With the recent rains and warmer temperatures, our springtime grasses are popping up. There are several options/strategies to prevent bloat on legumes or cool-season grasses:
1) Sweetlix Bloat Guard blocks (contains Poloxalene)
2) Avoid grazing clover in the morning, or on overcast/wet days
3) Feed good-quality hay or feed to curb appetite and change chemistry of rumen
a. Hand-feeding options, consider feeding in the morning before grazing period
b. Self-fed option, talk to us about options.
Continuing to feed hay or feed during the early part of green up also allows the pasture to heal more quickly from the drought.

Fred's Forecast

With our mild winter & rain our pastures have greened up and spring is around the corner. It's time to think about planting seed folks.
Most of you plant annual grasses. This year it's time to think differently. Planting annuals will be expensive; it may be time to look at perennial grasses. Talk to us about what you are considering. If you normally plant Sorghum, Sudan, or RedTop, you need to be looking at permanent grasses. This is the best time to make a permanent investment in your pastures. Study the long costs and see what is more economical.
- It will allow your pastures to heal up after the drought
- Cattle number's are low this year, most moving out due to the drought
- Cost to feed cattle will be less expensive with permanent grasses
Here are a few grasses to consider. Click here to read more of Fred's Forecast on our website.

Spring also means pregnant and lactating mares. Broodmares have specific nutritional requirements that differ from other classes of horses. There are differences both in the amount of feed mares need and the nutrient concentration needed in that feed. Throughout the year the broodmare goes through three different phases, each with a different nutritional demand. She is either in early gestation, late gestation or lactation. To keep this cycle going consistently requires that the mare receive the proper health care and nutrition.
Find out what your mare needs during each of these states.
