Fred's Forecast

With the rain we've had it's a great time to put down rye grass and clover seed. The rye grass grows quickly and as we've said before, it will help with offsetting your hay feeding. Don't forget to put high-mag mineral down when moving your cattle to green pasture. If bloat is a concern, be sure to keep a "bloat block" on hand. Stop by our store for all these supplies, minerals, bloat blocks and seed.
We still have hay. Grass hay is coming from Colorado. Alfalfa is coming from California and South Dakota. We're hauling it from out of state, which is costly. With hay coming from out of state folks need to be aware of the condition. Read the article on Weed Problems After Drought for more information on what to watch for.
From our family to yours, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Praying for a wetter New Year! Read more of Fred's Forecast on our website.

Fall is Prime Time to Begin a Supplemental Feeding Program for Deer
A buck can have the best genetics in the world, but without the proper nutrition, he'll never achieve his potential. One way to stack the deck in his favor is to supplement his nutrition. Fall is an excellent time to begin this. But before we talk about how to initiate a supplemental feeding program, let's evaluate the big picture.
The goal: Produce larger bucks with massive antlers. See our website for the complete article about this deer supplemental feeding program.

Expect a Weed Problem After a Drought
An AgriLife Extension expert advises - Expect weed growth after drought, wildfires. "A weed is simply a plant growing out of place or growing in a site where it is not desired."
Those are the thoughts of Dr. Barron Rector, Texas AgriLife Extension Service range specialist. And he said following this year's drought, wildfires and tons of imported hay, there may be a lot more weeds for landowners to deal with, and some could be invasive species or even toxic.

Pregnancy Check to Avoid Waste

Successful cattle producers have long recognized that fall is the time to pregnancy check cows before they get into the high maintenance costs of winter. It just doesn't make sense to put hundreds of dollars' worth of feed, pasture, interest, health care, and labor into a cow that is not going to bring home a paycheck next year. This is even more critical this year, with short pastures, scarce and expensive hay, and high feed prices.
If that cow isn't going to produce why not replace her with one that will have a calf in the spring or save her part of your winter cost? For more information on types of pregnancy checks, see our website.
