Newsweek/The Daily Beast recently ranked Carson-Newman College as America's leading higher education institution in community service and second overall among Most-Service Oriented schools. Congratulations to Carson-Newman! According to Dr. Nicole Saylor, of the College's Bonner Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement:
The average Carson-Newman student serves 134 hours, or about 4 hours per week during the academic year. Our students complete some 187,000 hours of various types of community service during the academic year. An additional 68,000 hours are served at Campus Ministry events such as spring and fall break trips and as a part of the campus-wide Inasmuch Day each year.
Did you know that Carson-Newman was the first college to host an Inasmuch Day? In just five years, the college's students have provided more than 10,000 hours of community service through their yearly Inasmuch events! For the college's most recent Inasmuch Day, a workforce of 565 volunteers generated some 1600 man-hours at 38 different locations, an effort mentioned in a local news report.
Operation Inasmuch is a significant factor in the school's compassion ranking. An Inasmuch Day serves as the community-service kickoff each year at Carson-Newman. This single day of projects is the first time many new students will have served their community's neediest with compassion. The Inasmuch Day provides these students with a first toe into the pond of mercy ministry that leads to ongoing service!
Moreover, Operation Inasmuch's model has helped all Carson-Newman students realize that mercy ministry goes beyond the sanctuary and into the streets. Just as our Savior did not walk on by when we were in deep spiritual need, we must stop when we see our neighbors in need, whether in the church or in the community beyond the church's four walls.
We thank God for Carson-Newman College and its commitment to prepare students to follow Jesus in all ways. You can see Carson-Newman featured in the Newsweek/ Daily Beast service rankings here.
