Spring Annual Educational Conference a huge success!

Attendance was up - excellent speakers - great reviews on Reynolds Plantation.  The golf event on Monday was fun but cold with the award for closest to the hole going to Brad Wilson and the overall winner being Val Van Deventer.  The rain held off but the golfers played in 43 degree weather!

Dinner that evening was fun - everyone having a chance to meet new folks and catch up with friends from the past.

And then to the conference Tuesday morning.  We had to add 20 extra chairs to the opening session - attendance was great all day.  We are still tallying the evaluations but on first glance they are stellar.

Not sure which session rated the highest but all were well attended.  Thank you to everyone who turned in evaluation forms - they do help us in planning future topics.

The luncheon speaker Retired Col. Moore discussing the Middle East was fascinating which was followed by the Ask the Experts Panel - there were so many questions and discussion that we never got to show their presentations.

If you attended the conference, make sure you check out the CD with all the presentations - there are extra handouts and the presentations for the sessions you missed.

And we closed out the day with our drawing for a $500 American Express Gift card - Congratulations to winner Cathy Hays from McGriff, Seibel & Williams

Then the reception where folks got to continue conversations started during the day and meet new folks.....

Committee Updates

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee challenges SEBC's membership to invite colleagues and industry professionals to become a part of the SEBC.  We believe SEBC provides industry-leading continuing education and unrivaled networking opportunities, and growing our membership gives the SEBC an even bigger platform to provide these and more benefits.

Membership continues to increase which is great news.  Just in the past month we welcomed the following new members:

Kelsy Lange - Invesco

Barbara Murphy - Law Offices of Ilene Ferenczy

Brett Wells - T. Rowe Price

Jason Vinikoor - Hansberger Global Investors

Charlie Barger - FBMC Benefits Management

Derrick Daniels - FBMC Benefits Management

Garry Spence - Lincoln Financial Group

Website Committee

Did you know that the SEBC's website www.sebc.org received over 43,000 hits during the month of March?  We're actively trying to make the website an even better resource for members.  Please visit the site periodically and let Bert Carmody know if you have ideas about how to make the site the best it can be.

Speaking of the Website - as the job market opens up which it is - keep an eye on our job bank listing (we have a job from Fidelity on there now) - click on Membership and then on job bank - And if you hear of any job, have them contact us and we will post the job for free.

Program Committee

The Program Committee will hold its first meeting to plan the fall conference on April 18 - any ideas for speakers or topics, please forward them to Jim Hill, Program Chair at jim.hill@regions.com

Communications Committee
This month, we turn the profiling spotlight on Julie Brock, the head of SEBC's Membership Committee.

Julie works in consulting sales for J.P. Morgan Retirement Services, where she provides her clients with detailed information about her company's recordkeeping capabilities, particularly for RFP purposes.

She's based in Kansas City, but has focused exclusively on clients from the South for many years.  Julie came to benefits work through the trust department side of banking, where she worked in client management and plan services.  Julie ultimately matriculated to recordkeeping work at American Century, which was acquired by her current employer in the early 2000s.  Julie is usually on the road a few days a week.

Julie has been involved with SEBC since 2007.  A motivating factor in joining was her belief that SEBC membership would expose her to a broad cross-section of plan sponsors in the Southeast, and would give her a solid understanding of sponsor concerns.   Julie was previously on the SEBC's Communications Committee.

Julie has three children- 19, 17, and 12 - and fondly observes that she is currently re-experiencing college, high school, and middle school all at once.  Julie shares her home in Kansas City with both a gray cat and a black lab.  As for the de rigueur interview question about the last good book Julie has read, Julie has been on a Mary Roach kick, and recommends "Packing for Mars" and "Stiff" for well-written, funny books incorporating the author's deep scientific knowledge."

Reporting for Participants with Deferred Vested Benefits - IRS Replaces Schedule SSA

Plan administrators are required to report certain information regarding participants who separate from service with the right to a deferred vested retirement benefit.  In Announcement 2011-21, the Internal Revenue Service ("IRS") designated Form 8955-SSA to be used to satisfy this reporting requirement.

The new form replaces Schedule SSA, which was previously attached to the Form 5500 annual return/report, and applies to plan years beginning after January 1, 2009.  Plan administrators must file this new form with the IRS rather than through the Department of Labor's EFAST2 filing system.

The new Form 8955-SSA must generally be filed by the last day of the seventh month following the last day of the plan year (e.g. July 31st for calendar year plans).  However, the IRS extended the deadline for the 2009 and 2010 plan years to the later of the general 2010 plan year due date or August 1, 2011.  Also, the rules for requesting extensions are the same as those for the Form 5500, so plan administrators may use Form 5558 to request an extension of up to two and a half months each year.

The 2009 Form 8955-SSA is expected to be available shortly, while the 2010 form is expected to be available later this year.  If necessary, plan administrators may use the 2009 form to file for the 2010 plan year.  For those plan administrators that have already submitted, or are in the process of completing, a Schedule SSA for the 2009 or 2010 plan year, the IRS will treat a Schedule SSA filed by April 20, 2011 as satisfying the applicable reporting requirements and no Form 8955-SSA is required.  No Schedule SSA should be filed after April 20th.

To satisfy the IRS Section 6057(b) reporting requirements, plan administrators should continue to report plan status changes on the Form 5500.
