Kumu Lomilomi Betty Kuli'iana Lau, comes to Chicago from the Big Island of Hawaii to teach "Lomilomi - the Art of Hawaiian Massage," a weekend of hands-on massage, Hawaiian style. Kumu Lomilomi (master massage therapist) Betty Kuli'iana Lau was voted one of the top thirteen therapists in the world by Luxury Spa Finder magazine in 2006. She has both formal Western and Hawaiian traditional styled massage training. Betty started learning lomilomi (Hawaiian massage) at the early age of seven from her Tutu (grandmother) and Anake (aunty). In Hawaiian culture, the keiki (children) are observed and screened to see who will be worthy of passing on ancient knowledge and who has "special gifts"that can be cultivated. It was the children's job to lomi adults after all the work was done usually at family luaus. Betty was also trained by other women in her family - her mother and mother-in-law taught her infant massage and "opu huli" - turned stomach believed caused by falls, especially in small children, resulting in a kink or turning of the stomach with attendant vomiting. Betty attended the Big Island School of Body Therapies. After massage school, she studied Upledgers Cranial Sacral techniques, Barnes Myofascial Release, St. John's Neuromuscular, Reflexology, Thai, Shiatsu, Sports, Balinese, Bamboo, and Hot Stones. She later trained with Kahuna Lomilomi Margaret Machado and Po'okela La'au Lapa'au Papa Henry Auwae (Hawaiian herbal/spiritual healing) and lomilomi. Betty is also a Reiki Master. Betty has created and taught all the traditional Hawaiian treatments and choreographed the famous Lomilomi Hula™ performed exclusively at the Mauna Lani Spa on the Big Island of Hawaii. Individual Massage Sessions with Betty Lau Lomilomi is spiritual and prayerful work. Physically it drains the lactic acid that builds up in your tissues from exercise and over-use of your muscles. This includes chronic or acute tension in your muscles from stress. Lomilomi helps to break up the knots in your muscles, filters it through your lymph system and then purifies it through your pu'uwai (heart). After a lomilomi one feels much lighter in body and spirit!
We always give credit to our Kupuna (elders) and Kumu (teachers). Auntie Margaret Machado said "Lomilomi is a loving touch" and Papa Henry Auwae said, "Healing is 80% spiritual and 20% the la'au (plants)." We also always mahalo Ke Akua (give credit to God) for the healing that takes place.
Private lomilomi massage sessions are available with Betty Lau on Thursday and Friday, June 28th and 29th. Call 708-445-1651 or email to make a reservation or to get more information. Special discounted rate of $85 per hour. Betty's regular fee is $100 per hour.
