Dog To The Line
Getting a high drive dog to the line - under control - is not easy. Instead of nagging the dog to stay in heel position as you approach, give the dog a job that if properly done, rewards the dog with his place at the line. It channels his energy instead of trying to suppress it.
Teach your dog that his job is to sit in the holding blind while you walk to the line and wait for you to call him to join you. You will need two platforms - one in the holding blind and one at the line - and a holding blind and you must use them everytime you do yard work and everytime you train with your group. The platforms make it very clear to the dog where he must be and create a positive learning environment. Once your dog has mastered the job you can remove the platform from the holding blind and then from the line.
Begin teaching with the holding blind two or three steps from the line. Gradually add distance. Don't rush, don't nag and remember that practice makes perfect and consistency is critical.
Ready, Set, Forward
Many dogs set up with perfect focused attention only to lose that focus and enthusiasm one or two steps into the heeling pattern/rally course/during transitions. An easy, simple and fun training game - "One Step, Two Steps" will keep your dog's eyes on you in the ring.
Set your dog up in heel position as if you were going to begin heeling and immediately release your dog straight up, keeping her in heel position, break out and play. Set your dog up again and this time heel forward one step, release straight up, etc. Do the same thing a third time but takes two steps forward before releasing.
Once your dog understands the game, start taking additional steps before releasing. Then randomize when you play the game; sometimes at one step, followed by five steps, etc. Play the game as a warm-up outside the ring, play it when you are practicing transitions between exercises. Play it without a toy while you are transitioning in the ring, but be sure to keep your dog under control. Make sure you release straight up in heel position; not out to the side or forged ahead of you. This is a game that does not use food - YOU are the cookie! The result is a happy, focused and enthusiastic partner!! |
