Hunt Test TipTraining with a Platform

One of the many highlights of the recent Pat Nolan seminar hosted by the NRHRC was the importance of training with a platform for both novice and experienced dogs.

The first step is creating a positive association with the platform - good things happen when the dog is on the platform.  Start by placing a small bowl with a few treats in it on the platform.  Lead the dog to the platform, let him hop up and find the reward.  It doesn't take long for the dog to race to the platform. Give the behavior a 'name' and then cue the dog to get on the platform. At this point you no longer need the bowl with treats.  Continue to reward however by tossing the dog a bumper (and releasing the dog to get the bumper) after he's on the platform.  Have another bumper in your pocket and call the dog back to the platform and once he arrives, release and toss the other bumper.

Once the dog has a solid foundation of getting on and returning to the platform, skills such as steadying, honoring and casting can be taught using the platform.  For videos of platform training, go to Pat Nolan's website www.trainingretrieverpuppies.com

Obedience Training Tip:  Platforms Are For Obedience Too!

Platform training has important applications for obedience training as well.  Begin by creating a positive association with the platform.

For Novice dogs with 'happy feet', the platform is the perfect place to teach a kick-back stand.  Use the platform to teach the sphinx down that is so critical to a dynamite drop on recall in Open.  For Utility, the platform is the ideal way to teach your dog not to move forward on the down and sit portions of the signals exercise, along with the go-out, turn and sit.

Janice Gunn has several excellent videos in her lending library that will show you how to use the platform for obedience.  Her website is www.tntkennels.com
