Rally Tip:  Lost on Course?

It happens to everyone.....you're sailing right along when all of a sudden you can't find the next exercise.

A very common response to this is to panic and stop or even worse, panic and start to wander around  trying to find the next exercise.  When you do this, not only have you lost your way, you've lost that critical connection with your dog.  Imagine it from your dog's perspective.....all of a sudden everything stops - you stop moving or you're lurching about, you stop breathing and your dog has no idea of what's happening now or next.  Many dogs will 'check out' and start sniffing, try to wander, or at the very least will stand there confused and concerned.

You can and will regain your composure, your way and your dog's attention if you stop and ask your dog to sit.  Asking your dog to sit will give your dog something to do and keep the connection there while you look to see where the next sign is and what it says. Once you find the next exercise sign, smile, breathe, get your dog's focus back on you and as a team get back on track.

Yes, the clock will keep running and yes, it is a 'deductible offense'.  But it's far better to lose a little time and incur a small deduction than it is to end up with an NQ.  And your dog will thank you for this extra bit of teamwork!

Hunt Test Tip:  Maximize your winter training.

With daylight hours shorter and time for yard work and limited for teaching concepts during the week, it's tempting to skip TEACHING for the fun of setting up tests on the weekend.

Instead, get out early on the weekends.  Have a plan. Choose the skill you need to work on and the appropriate drill you need to run.  Have a test set-up in mind that incorporates the skill. School your dog, take a lunch break and then set up the test.

Allow plenty of time to be sure your dog understands the lesson you are teaching that day.  Allow enough time to run the marks and blinds so that if you need to simplify or re-run you can do it.  You want your dog coming away from the day with a clear and successful picture.  Don't rush and don't push and don't end on anything less than a great note.
