A Blue Ribbon Trifecta!

Blue Ribbon students ruled the Novice C class at the recent CDSP obedience trials in Yorktown Hgts.

Congratulations to Michelle Ostrander & Sawyer on winning first place, Bobbie Wood & Emmy on winning second place and Maureen McEntee & Jenna on winning third place.  Three talented teams for sure!

Trial tip: Keeping your dog's attention while you transition from one exercise to the next is as important as having your dog's attention during an exercise.

Know where you need to set up for the next exercise and once the judge says 'exercise finished', heel your dog to that spot right away.  You can talk to your dog during a transition and you should!

Once you get to the next exercise, continue to keep your dog engaged with you and excited about performing the next exercise.  Don't stand there with your dog in heel position waiting while the judge walks over - move in place with your dog, play some attention games, smile and relax.

When the judge asks if you are ready, your dog will be focused, alert and ready to work.
Hunt test tip:  Just like any other athlete, your dog needs a physical and mental warm up before going to the line and a cool down when you are done.

When you arrive at a test, allow yourself enough time to get your dog out for a brisk and lengthy walk.  This will get your dog's body ready for those 100 yard sprints to pick up the birds.

Get your dog's brain ready by adding some obedience to your pre-test warm up; heel, fetch, hold, return to heel, sit and stay.

When you are done, give your dog a drink and a more leisurely walk and some stretches to cool his muscles down before putting him up.

And don't forget to tell him what a great job he did - even if it wasn't perfect there is always something to be happy about.

Congratulations to Lisa Kane and Trifecta's Place Your Bets!

Lisa and Bookie earned the Reserve Jam in the Open field trial stake at the Golden Retriever Club of America National Specialty. Quite an accomplishment at the highest level of training.
