Dear
What a month this has been for the 'Brazilian Blowout.' I don't know if you have been following all the Portland news about the BB, but basically the product, an excellent hair-smoothing-treatment, has received lots of bad and controversial press, claiming that it contained, and released excessive amounts of formaldehyde during the flat-iron process. Apparently, hairdressers and customers, here and in Canada have reported feeling sick following use of the product (burning eyes, nose throats, breathing difficulties, and even one claim of hair loss). If bad news travels fast, this went at warp-speed. I've used Brazilian Blowout for the last four months and really liked the finished result. It really provided the client with a break from their unruly hair. BUT, formaldehyde is nothing to mess around with. So, while all this "news" is circulating in our area, I am left feeling more than a little frustrated and angry because I really like the product. I took all the training required to use it and have purchased quite a supply of it. Anyway, after lots of testing (OSHA, and Health Sciences Associates), it seems pretty clear that this product exceeds permissible exposure levels see attached link: Koin6news . Consequently, our shop has suspended all BB services, and I doubt that we will be able to offer it again. I am now researching the use of another product that has GREAT results, is less expensive, and lasts approximately 3 to 4 months. So, please don't be put off by all the bad BB press. I am impressed with what I have heard about the Marcia Teixeria (a safe keratin smoothing treatment). Here is a link to the product I am recently researching and plan to start using soon: MarciaTeixeira

Question of the month, "How does stress affect hair and what can I do about it?" Stress has a huge negative effect on hair. Have you ever experienced or seen a person who mysteriously had a perfect circle of hair missing from their scalp, as if someone had taken cookie-cutter and removed a circle or circles of hair? This is often caused by stress from trauma, ie. car accident, a death, divorce, career, job loss, etc. Eating a healthy diet, drinking plenty of water and exercising, lowers stress levels and improves hair health. Eating 50% raw food is reported to minimize inflammation, especially foods high in sulfur. "...sulfur is able to make our hair, nails, and skin shine with radiance. Sulfur truly is the most beautifying of all food nutrients, and the best cosmetic in the world."

Face shape and cut
Looking for the right cut can be daunting. Especially when surrounded by Hollywood hair. Sometimes (not often) my clients will ask for something that is not possible due to hair density, time, length, texture, etc. Everyone wants what they don't have. If you have curly hair, you want smooth hair, if you are someone with stick straight hair, you want soft waves or a spiral curl, etc. A cut can complement any head shape. Knowing what face shape you are can narrow down the search for what looks best on you. Someone with a long face benefits from a bob or short layered cut with soft edges leaning toward the face. Heart shaped faces benefit from having longer layers that flip away from the face, opening up the chin area. Oval faces are the lucky ones that can pretty much get away with most cuts. Square (pear) shaped faces should avoid blunt bangs unless wanting intentional sharp features. Soft bangs with short to medium length hair with waves are beneficial to blend and narrow the forehead. Wide foreheads soften up with bangs or a fringe. Narrow foreheads benefit from directing the hair away from the face. Receding foreheads are understated by directing the bangs over over the forehead with an outwardly directed volume.
Other considerations are profile, jaw and nose shape. Profiles are convex, concave or straight. Your hairdresser is trained to consider all options. All of this information can be overwhelming, but understanding your face shape will help you to communicate with your hairdresser.
