Marketing Tip from Rebecca Best Plankey
The Extra Degree
Every summer SME CPAs holds a Firm Retreat to start our new fiscal year. It's a way to reflect on tax season outcomes and prepare for next year. This year I implemented a new marketing theme for the 2011-2012 year. We are calling it 212° in 2012. It is based on a book by Sam Parker & Mac Anderson titled 212° The Extra Degree. Its message is simple. At 211°, water is hot. At 212°, water boils. And with boiling water; comes steam. And steam can power a locomotive. So what does that mean for you? It means that something very small can make a huge difference. It reminds us that success in anything requires effort. To achieve results we did not think were possible; it requires additional effort or an extra degree. Make a commitment to yourself and your business to operate at 212°. For ideas on 212° actions, contact me. Or purchase a copy of the book and make some steam!

Technology Tip from Sharon Bragg
Spell Check
Do you ever wonder what people think of you when they read something you've written, especially if they don't know you well? I was told often by Mrs. McGowan, my 9th grade English teacher, that the way you write, just as much as the way you speak, look, and act influences how people regard you. Granted, the English language has taken a beating since those long ago school days; but shouldn't we still try to make the best impression possible? If we want clients to feel comfortable that we are adequate to handle the job they are entrusting to us, shouldn't we try to speak, write and act in the most professional manner possible? What does this have to do with technology? Simply put -- SPELL CHECK. Every Microsoft Office program includes that little ABC icon with a check mark under it. If you prefer to use the function keys, F7 activates the Spelling and Grammar checker as well. Each program can be set to automatically check your spelling and grammar. Let's all make a conscious effort to use it and make sure our written communications (letters, memos, e-mails, etc.) get to their audience in a manner that would make Mrs. McGowan proud. |
