August 2011
Dear ,

The middle of August already?  Wow!  That means it's time once again for students and teachers to get back in the classroom.  Did you know that there are tax credits and deductions for college costs?  That's the topic of our latest video tax tip.   This is just one way that we keep you informed and educated of ways that you can save your hard-earned money.  Speaking of saving, have you ever wondered how long it would take you to save for a major purchase?  We have some financial calculators that can help set up and solve similar equations.  We hope you and your children are adjusting well to the routine of the new school year, and just remember we are a phone call, email, or visit away!

Confused about QuickBooks?

In addition to seminars, we have added QuickBooks Workshops.  These workshops are shorter and focus more on certain aspects of the program, like payroll.

Do you handle the payroll at your office? Are your records showing negative balances or overdue liabilities that you know you have paid? The professionals at SME can help with these issues!

Sign up for our Payroll Workshop on Thursday, August 25th at our office from 3:00PM to 6:00PM.  To find out more information, visit our website.  To register, please email Rebecca Best Plankey today to sign up.  Also, if you know of someone who needs QuickBooks training, please feel free to forward this information.

Face-to-Screen

It isn't exactly face-to-face, but communication to your audience through video is an emerging trend that can set you apart. If you were hearing these words and seeing me say them, you would be much more engaged and focused on what I am saying. The same is true about the message you are trying to deliver to your audience. Don't just tell them what you can do for them on your website or in a brochure, show them! We have just started using video as a way to broadcast some tax tips. You can view the latest video here. Think of a message that you feel strongly about, even if it is already shown on your website, and record yourself or another influential person in your organization saying it. This could be your mission statement, your service areas or a special deal you are offering. Another powerful way to use video is for your testimonials. It's one thing to read what others say about your company, but what if your prospects could see and hear the positive feedback?  These videos don't have to be long or produced in a studio, just create a script, rehearse and record, then upload. You can post videos on YouTube and share the link on your website and other social media platforms. This is another way to drive traffic to your website...don't you love how the marketing mix always come full-circle?!

For Your Information

Just how much money could you save by taking your lunch everyday instead of eating out? How long will it take to pay off your credit cards? Should you consolidate your loans? Should you have a Traditional or Roth IRA? You can find the answer to these questions and more simply by going to the financial calculators portion of our website. We have over 20 different calculators to help you find ways to save money. Of course the calculators cannot answer each and every specific situation, but they are a great start. So please visit us at www.smecpa.com and click on the Financial Calculators link and start finding ways to save. I am sure you will find them very helpful, but if you do find you have more questions feel free to contact us.

Thanks for taking the time to read our newsletter.  Stay tuned for next month's tips and features.

Sincerely,

Serotta Maddocks Evans, CPAs
