March 2011:  The Heat Is On!
Dear ,

It is now mid-March, otherwise known as March Madness, and the deadline to file your 2010 income tax return is less than a month away. Get out those W-2's, locate the tax deductions you filed away, and begin the process of getting your return filed timely.  The team of professionals at SME can take your information and turn it into a finished product using planning and teamwork.  Let your tax preparer be your "point guard" with the rest of his teammates helping him drive to the basket and score for you with a tax return that takes advantage of every allowable deduction.  The SME team wants to make the tax return process as smooth and painless as possible for business owners and individual filers.

When are individual tax returns due?  "Tax Day" is usually April 15th unless it falls on a Saturday, Sunday or a holiday.  Well, Friday, April 15, 2011 is a holiday in the District of Columbia.  Therefore, tax day for 2010 is Monday, April 18, 2011 for the whole country.  Don't let your game go down to the buzzer or into overtime!  Call or come in today to set up a meeting with one of the SME Team.

Online financial tools

This month I thought I would point out a few free websites that provide quality financial information. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants has created two financial websites with the purpose of educating the general populace.  One is feedthepig.org (i.e. feed your piggy bank and save money).  It provides a wealth of information on how to save money, reduce expenses, etc.  The other AICPA website is www.360financialliteracy.org.  The goal of this website is to educate and provide information to help individuals make sound financial decisions.  The site contains a number of financial calculators, educational videos, and answers to frequently asked questions.  Lastly, I'll mention www.mint.com.  This website was created by Intuit, the makers of Quicken and QuickBooks.  It allows users to enter bank account, credit card and loan information, and the site will automatically pull all transactions and categorize them.  It lets you set budgets and savings goals and monitors your progress in achieving them. It even includes iPhone and Android apps.

The Juggling Act

Anyone who reads my Facebook statuses knows that I am a busy woman.  Some say my lifestyle exhausts them just to read about it.  While it exhausts me at times, it's a good exhaustion.  It's an accomplished exhaustion.  So how do I keep the juggling act going?  Here are some tips for the busy professional:

  • I use lists -- one for work and one for my personal life.  If I don't finish something, it doesn't get crossed off and goes to the next list until I do it.  It might be on the list for a month; but eventually I get to it.  I try to keep it simple by knowing the top key people who I should stay in touch with on a regular basis.  This helps me focus in the areas that are most important.
  • I specialize in what I do.  While I would love to have some amazing graphic skills, I don't.  And I don't have time to learn them.  But I do have the mind for strategy and ideas; so I focus on my strengths.  I also know (sometimes) when to ask for help and I have learned to say no by politely declining when I have to.  I cannot be everywhere all of the time and do enjoy just being at home.
  • I have a support group.  I know women with similar lives who I can call and lean on when I feel the pressure beginning to crack my composure.  And sometimes, I crack.  That's when I retreat and regroup; because as much as I love my busy life, I also love myself.

So enjoy your busy-ness!!  Just remember to stay organized, focused and take care of the juggler!

Thanks for taking the time to read our newsletter.  Stay tuned for next month's tips and features.

Sincerely,
