Technology Tip from Paul Wade
Free productivity software allows you functionality of the office, at home.
If you're like me, your home computer is probably not equipped with all the same productivity software as your office computer. Full-featured licenses of Microsoft Office and other software can get pretty expensive. Fortunately, there are a number of free options out there that provide much of the same functionality. They may not suffice for business use, but they can handle many personal tasks.
Need Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, try Google Documents or OpenOffice.Org. Both of these programs are free. They can read and edit Microsoft Office files or create new documents. Google Docs is hosted on the internet and you can easily share documents when you have to collaborate with others. Most new computers come with either Norton or McAfee anti-virus and spyware. These programs tend to be memory hogs causing your computer to slow down, and once the free trial runs out, they're expensive. AVG Free or Avast are two free alternatives that in some cases, use less of your computer's resources.
There are numerous other examples out there for free productivity software. I hear about many of them at CPA technology conferences, but other places to check include www.cnet.com or www.komando.com.

Marketing Tip from Rebecca Best
The Good "Old Fashioned" Way...

We all spend a majority of our day talking to people. Often it's current or prospective clients; sometimes it is a referral source. Are you making the most of those conversations? Are you talking about the weather or about business? Anyone can walk outside and see the sky is blue; but let's discuss the reason you are talking to them in the first place. If it's a current or prospective client, you are talking to them about their business, usually in terms of the services you are providing. What about other services they may need? Could you help them by introducing them to another client you have who could meet their need or a referral source who is looking for more business? Wouldn't that be a win-win situation? Another way you and a referral source can leverage your relationship is to host an event together. Each of you invites some clients for a wine tasting or a lunch and watch what happens. You meet their clients, they meet yours, the clients meet each other, and viola! Business happens - the good "old fashioned" way!
