Choctaw Author LeAnne Howe Wins The Tulsa Library Trust's American Indian Words Award
| |
As young people, you often hear advice instructing you to "follow your dreams." But many who give this advice never provide you with any background as to how they themselves followed their dreams, or as to how others followed their dreams successfully.
 | |
"Just write. No matter what you want to write about."
|
This creates a complex quandary; after all, you want to believe that you can follow your dreams to success...but first, you need to see that others have done the same.
For any Choctaw high school or college student, there might be no better example of the rewards that can come from following your dreams than the one set by LeAnne Howe.

SAP Success Story: Heidi Johnson
| |
As high school and college students, it can sometimes be easy to lose sight of the important things toward which we are working. After all, the future is important...but it often pales in immediate relevance when put up against such things as your term paper that is due, or that traffic ticket that needs to be paid! This is one of the reasons why the Scholarship Advisement Program was started: to help you keep one eye on the future while you take care of all the other things going on in your life right now.
 | | "I have a great interest in serving the native community later in life" |
After all, many of those "far away," "for your future" things must be taken care of early, or they will never happen at all.
This is true for college applications, for scholarship and grant applications, for preparing for the SAT and ACT, for taking advantage of special programs that reward the small handful of students who actually take care of things early, and for just about everything else! After all, it is those students who do the little things to prepare for their future who will reap the benefits when the future comes.
