Gates Millennium Scholarship Workshop - Tuesday 4:30 at Southeastern Oklahoma State University
|
On Tuesday, November 16th Choctaw college-bound students are invited to attend a 4:30 p.m. workshop on the Gates Millennium Scholarship Program in the Morrison Building (Room 203) at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, OK. The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma Scholarship Advisement Program (SAP) strongly encourages all Choctaw college-bound students to attend. The workshop is co-hosted by SAP and Southeastern Oklahoma State University's Native American Center.
Students will learn about the Gates Millennium application process and other helpful application tips. High school juniors, and especially high school seniors, are welcome to attend along with their parents. While only seniors may apply for the scholarship, juniors can use this experience to become familiar with the program, according to SAP staff.
Funded by a one billion dollar grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Gates Millennium Scholars program is a twenty year commitment designed to fund the college education of twenty thousand high achieving, underrepresented minority students and to develop a group of leaders that represent the ethnic diversity of America in the 21st century.
Applications for scholarships must be submitted online by Monday, January 10, 2011 11:59 p.m. EST or postmarked on or before Monday, January 10, 2011.
Steven H. Abbott, Coordinator of Outreach and Student Services for the American Indian Graduate Center (AIGC), will conduct the workshop at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Abbott also manages AIGC's Gates Millennium Scholars Program. AIGC is the oldest and largest national provider of scholarships for American Indian and Alaska Native graduate students.
Abbott has committed his career to serving in the field of higher education. Before joining AIGC, he held the position of Associate Director for Recruitment and Student Affairs for The Harvard University Native American Program (HUNAP).
