Welcome to the latest issue of SAP News, the online newsletter of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma (CNO) Scholarship Advisement Program (SAP).  SAP News is the place for the latest information about events and opportunities for CNO scholars and their parents.

 Top US Colleges to Recruit Choctaw Undergraduates
  

Saturday November 6th, 21 of America's best undergraduate colleges and programs will be on hand at the Ivy League & Friendsivylogo event sponsored by the Choctaw Nation Scholarship Advisement Program (SAP).  The all-day event will be held at the Choctaw Casino Resort in Durant, Oklahoma.  This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for prospective students and parents to meet one-on-one with recruiting representatives from the leading schools in the nation.

The Choctaw Scholarship Advisement Program (SAP) third annual Ivy League & Friends - Choctaw Student Recruitment is getting close.  Event and meeting planning is in high gear.

A complete and detailed schedule of events and map of the Choctaw Casino Resort will be provided at event registration.  But for basic planning for students and parents, here's a quick guide to the events that will occur on Saturday, November 6th at the Choctaw Casino Resort in Durant, Oklahoma.

Saturday November 6th


8:00 am - 10:00 am STUDENT REGISTRATION Choctaw Conference Center Lobby.  Students and their guests will check in and receive name badges and event information including complete event schedule and map of Choctaw Casino Resort.  Breakfast will be provided


8:45 am - 11:55 am BREAKOUT SESSIONS Choctaw Conference Center.  There will be undergraduate and graduate tracks for breakout sessions that will include:  University presentations, general sessions offering information on admissions and financial aid and sessions dealing strictly with parent information.


12:15 pm - 1:30 pm LUNCHEON Choctaw Event Center.  Luncheon guests will include school and organization representatives, students, parents, educators, tribal leaders and local dignitaries.


1:30 pm - 3:30 pm COLLEGE FAIR Choctaw Event Center.  Meet 1 on 1 with 21 of the nation's best undergraduate programs.  Meet 1 on 1 with 18 of the nation's top graduate programs.

Brown University
  

 Brown University is a private Ivy League university in Providence, Rhode Island. The university was founded in 1764, before the AmericanBrown University Revolution, and the campus is situated on 143 acres. Brown aims to serve not only its community, but the country and the world through discovering and preserving knowledge and passing it on to students. It was the first university to accept students regardless of their religious affiliations. 


There are about 6,013 undergraduates at Brown along with 2,248 graduate students. The students at Brown come from all 50 states and about 107 foreign countries. An extremely selective school, Brown only accepts about 9% of undergraduate applicants. Browns graduate programs accept about 18% of students while the medical school only accepts approximately 2% of applicants.  About 7% of Brown's students are international students, and approximately 31% of students at Brown University are minorities. Brown has made a commitment to need-blind admissions, and has eliminated loans for families with incomes of less than $100,000.

Cornell University


 Cornell University is a coeducational Ivy League school in Ithaca, New York. The university was founded in 1865. In addition to CornellCornell's more remote Ithaca campus, it also has a campus in New York City, a campus in Qatar, and a number of facilities around the world. The Qatar campus is home to the Weill Medical College, which was the first American medical school to open in another country.


Cornell also has a number of other facilities spread throughout the world including the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico and laboratories in Peru.
One unique thing about Cornell is its use of quarters rather than semesters. Cornell has a strong focus on research and it is the fifth largest producer in the world of graduates who continue their education and earn PhDs in any field. The university has seven undergraduate colleges offering 70 majors in addition to a number of graduate programs.

Emory University

 

 Emory University is a private research university located in Druid Hills, Georgia, in the Atlanta area. Founded in 1836, the school was Emorynamed after a well-known Methodist minister. Emory sits on 631 acres and is divided between the Oxford College campus and the main Druid Hills campus. The school is divided into nine academic divisions including the law school, the undergraduate school, the business school, the nursing school, and the medical school. 


Emory has been ranked as having one of the top twenty undergraduate programs in the county. Its law, business, nursing and medical programs are also among the top in the country. There are almost 70 undergraduate majors offered at the university as well as 56 minors and a number of joint degree programs. More than half of the students earn a double major or a major and a minor.

Stanford University 

Founded in 1891 Stanford is a top private research university located in California just south of the San Francisco metro area. The universityStanford is organized into seven separate schools which issue degrees.  Most undergraduates enroll in the school of Humanities and Sciences or School of Engineering.  Even though graduate students outnumber undergrads by 2:1, the 6,000 undergraduates have access to a top ranked faculty and the many graduate students that serve as teaching assistants and researchers. 

In terms of academics Stanford treats its smaller undergraduate student body as a special and "more selective" school than the graduate program.  A large amount of resources are devoted towards them.  The faculty supports and fosters an atmosphere of coexistence and collaboration between the graduate and undergraduate students.

Harvard Divinity School

 
The Harvard Divinity School was founded in 1816 as the first non-denominational school for the study of religion in the United States.  The Harvardmission of the school is to train and educate future religious leaders, and religion scholars.  While the divinity school operates programs of study specifically for their students, their classes are also available to the wider student body at Harvard.


The students and faculty at HDS come from a wide variety of religious backgrounds and persuasions.  Most Christian denominations, as well as Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and Sikh scholars can be found amongst their faculty.  Unlike other schools for religious studies, HDS balances secular and faith-based views of religious studies to give their students a wide range of perspectives and viewpoints.

Harvard Graduate School
of Education



The Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) is one of Harvard University's graduate schools. It is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Harvardat the main Harvard campus. HGSE was founded in 1920 and is one of the top education schools in the country.


The graduate school offers 13 different masters programs and two doctoral programs. The doctorate degrees offered include a Doctor of Education Leadership (Ed.L.D.) degree and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree. The Doctor of Education Leadership degree is an integrated one that takes advantage of the resources offered by all of Harvard's schools.

Purdue University
Graduate School


 
Purdue University Graduate School in West Lafayette, Indiana facilitates over 100 graduate programs in every area imaginable.  Currently there are overPurdue 8,500 graduate students enrolled at all levels from masters to post doc.  The wide selection of courses, many funding options, and opportunities for professional development make Purdue a top choice for students continuing their education after their undergraduate studies.


Most graduate school programs fall into one of three categories at Purdue: Degree and Academic Programs, Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs, and Certificate Programs.  The main difference between academic and interdisciplinary programs is that the former have their own department while the latter utilize resources across campus from many departments to offer a masters degree.  Certificate programs are available in over a dozen areas and make graduating student's workforce ready in fields like ESL, nurse practitioner, survey research, and applied statistics.

St. Louis - George Warren Brown School of Social Work 


 
The School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis is the #1 program for future social workers in the US.  Founded in Washington University1925, the Brown School has a long history of providing an excellent training ground for this demanding profession.  Students who choose the Brown School will find many advantages over programs at other schools including a world class faculty, library, and special research institutes.

Especially important for the Native American student who is considering Washington University are the resources provided by the Kathryn M. Buder Center for American Indian Studies. This interdisciplinary academic unit is one of the top institutions in the country that explores a wide range of American Indian issues related to social work.
