Hold on Tight. UGSE Opens in Two Weeks!

UGSEview3

September 20th. That's the date that is burned into the brain of every single UG employee at the moment. According to just about everyone, that is the date that UGSE will open its doors and start selling wine, beer, spirits and sake to the South End!

You'll be seeing lots of changes in the coming weeks. While everything may not go exactly according to plan (or timeline!), over the next month you will see a new website, our first foray into merchandising, and lots of exciting new partnerships, events and products. It's true this is our second store, but in so many ways, this is just the beginning.

There will be some changes to the newsletter too. The Spotlight and Tweets will be the same for both stores, but there is simply no way we can highlight every tasting and event in the newsletter. Therefore, it's more important then ever that you regularly check the events page of our website for all the tasting details, as well as follow us on Twitter and Facebook for daily updates. One event we definitely will be highlighting? Our September 20th opening-night tasting with Peter Gago, the famed winemaker for Penfolds, who is coming to town to help us open our store.

We're so excited to show UGSE to all of you in just a couple short weeks. We think it's going to knock your socks off.

Until then, have a drink - and a long night sleep - for us!

Urban Tastings

Be sure to join us on Thursday and Friday nights from 5-8 and Saturdays from 3-6 for our regular tastings. Below is a sample of tastings at both of our stores this month. "UGCH" indicates the tasting will take place at Chestnut Hill, while "UGSE" indicates our South End store.

Wednesday, September 5, 5-8 PM at UGCH: We love welcoming the next generation of wine making families to UG. We're kicking off Back-to-School week in style with a visit from Hailey Trefethen, the daughter of John and Janet Trefethen. The Trefethen line-up has always held a special place in our hearts (it was pretty much the first wine I ever tried!), so we're thrilled to welcome Hailey for this special Wednesday night tasting.

Saturday, September 8, 3-6 PM at UGCH: It's small production French wine and gourmet potato chips all day when we are joined by Roy from importer Cynthia Hurley and the folks from Sal's Gourmet potato chips!

Friday, September 14, 5-8 PM at UGCH: Get ready to celebrate the Jewish New Year with a Kosher wine tasting with Shirlee from United. We'll help you deck out your Rosh Hashanah table in style!

Saturday, September 15, 3-6 PM at UGCH: It's time to make movie night a grown-up affair, with the help of Quinn Popcorn and a Chardonnay tasting! Stop by, grab a few bags of this delicious, all-natural popcorn and a bottle of Chardonnay from your favorite region, then head home to curl up on the couch!

Wednesday, September 19, 5-9 PM at UGSE: Tonight is the preview shopping night at UGSE for South End residents! Spots are limited and are by invitation only, so if you live in the South End and want an invitation, send us your email address today! Proceeds from the evening go to benefit the Childe Hassam Park on Columbus Avenue.

Thursday, September 20, 5-7 PM at UGSE: We are truly honored to welcome Peter Gago, the world-renowned winemaker at Penfolds, to the opening night of The Urban Grape South End. Peter will be tasting our customers on a wide range of Pensfolds wines (including the Grange), signing bottles, and helping us to celebrate the store's first day. This is an exclusive opportunity for UG and our clients, and one we cannot wait to share with you!

Saturday, September 22, 3-6 PM at UGSE: We couldn't imagine holding our first Saturday tasting at UGSE without two of our favorites. Join Andrew from High & Mighty beer and Frank from Carolina for a beer and wine tasting event of epic proportions!

Saturday, September 22, 3-6 PM at UGCH: Gluten-free day at UGCH with goodies from Glutenus Minimus, a local gluten-free bakery, and a gluten-free beer tasting with Ben. Not digging the gluten-free? We'll have Andrew from Valkyrie Selections here too with a tasting of his hand-curated wine selections.

Friday, September 28, 5-8 PM at UGCH: Two words: free bubbly. And amazing, small-production bubbly too. Stop by and sample the line-up of Champagne from Thienot, a family-owned champagne house in Reims.

Saturday, September 29, 3-6 PM at UGCH: Night Shift Brewery was started by three friends who brewed as an after hours hobby. Now a legit "nano-brewery" in Everett, they're stopping by to pour their goods. Also joining, Linda from T'Art, a locally made baking mix that will inspire your sweet and savory creations!

Saturday, September 29, 3-6 PM at UGSE: Another beer and wine extravaganza with Deb from Classic Wines and the boys from Jack's Abby!

As always, check the events page on our website for event updates and newly added tastings!

Spotlight Wine: 2004 Perrier-Jouet "Belle Epoque" Brut (Epernay, Champagne, France)

perrier jouet

It seems whenever we have something to celebrate, Perrier-Jouet is almost always in our glass. It's light and crisp, but has enough structure to make you take notice. It's an elegant wine in a gorgeous painted bottle that ushers in a feeling of festivity - whether you're toasting dinner guests or popping it open to pair with pizza.

Herve Deschamps, the chief wine-maker of this respected Champagne house, has said that the 2004 Belle Epoque is "like a freshly-cut diamond." We agree, and think you'll love its brilliance as well. This wine will age for over ten more years, making it a perfect bottle to stash for upcoming occasions.

September, with its back-to-school mentality, is the start of new beginnings. Celebrate in style with Perrier-Jouet!
