40 Days, 40 Nights

 lent

We don't know what happened between last year and now, but last year a shocking number of our customers gave up alcohol for Lent. This year, well...not so much. We like this year's trend much better. After all, someone who could turn water into wine would never want you to go without it for 40 whole days!

We've got lots to add to your life over the next month. We're ramping up our local beer tastings, continuing to sample local food on Saturdays, and have TWO great pop-up nights in March. Not to mention we're on the cusp of ros season. All great things to get your through your 40 days in style.

Below are a few event and tasting highlights for the upcoming month:

Tuesday, February 28, 7 PM: Tonight! There are just a few seats left for our Stag's Leap dinner with The Fireplace in Brookline. Among the five wines we'll taste from this famous district are three 1999 Stag's Leap District Cabernets - all paired with Chef Jim Solomon's seasonal New England fare. Call 617.975.1900 to RSVP!

Saturday, March 3, 2-5 PM: Our first tasting with new distributor Luigi Bosca! Stop by to taste these fab Argentinian wines.

Sunday, March 4, 7-9 PM: There are two - count 'em, two - tickets left for our Home Mixology Night with local cocktail legend Jackson Cannon of The Hawthorne. If you've always wanted to mix up your own specialty cocktail, you don't want to miss this event! Click to buy tickets today!

Wednesday, March 7, 5:30-7 PM: It's a dream come true to partner with Upstairs on the Square as we present an evening with Violet Grgich of Grgich Hills Estate. Tickets are $45 and available by clicking here.

Saturday, March 17, 2-5 PM: While others drink green beer, we'll be pairing wine with delectable homemade treats from local cookie pros Cow & Crumb. With a tag line like, "Don't have a cow, have a cookie," what's not to love?

Saturday, March 24, 2-5 PM: Belly up to the bar with Woodstock Inn Brewery and Fastachi Nuts. This is a Saturday pairing made in March Madness heaven!

Sunday, March 25, 7-9 PM: March is Women's History Month, so who better to invite to UG than the luscious ladies of LUPEC (Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails)? We'll be taking a look at the roll of women in the beverage industry while tasting wine, sake and spirits made by companies with women at the helm. Our latest restaurant obsession, Citizen Public House & Oyster Bar, will be there to pair small plates throughout the night! Click to buy tickets today!

Saturday, March 31, 2-5 PM: Celebrate the impending blossoming of spring (and the impending arrival of house guests for Easter and Passover) with selections from our new spring inventory paired with fresh cheeses from Whole Foods Brighton!

Sunday, April 1, 7-9 PM: We're pairing up with Chef Michael Scelfo of Russell House Tavern and Prism, the young adult network of The New Center, for our best ever Kosher with a Kick! KWAK has become a rite of passage into spring - an annual celebration of food and wine, friendship and community. Come re-imagine your Passover table - from food to wine to traditions! Click to buy tickets today!

As always, check the events page on our website for event updates and newly added tastings!

Spotlight Wine: 2006 San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino (Tuscany)

 San Filippo

Picture yourself at the end of a very, very long work week. You're in your favorite cozies, with your favorite person, queuing up a movie you've been wanting to watch for months. You're on the couch - the only thing keeping you upright is the bowl of take-out bolognese in front of you. And in your glass is the yummiest, smoothest, most harmonious glass of Brunello you've had in a long, long while. After just one sip it becomes the best part of your day. After two sips, you've forgotten why it was you even had a long week. By the third sip, you're as cozy on the inside as your jammies are making you on the outside.

That was us last Friday. It can be you this Friday.

Latest Obsession

yuzu omoi

If, like us, you are starting to long for spring and sunshine, you need not look any further than our latest obsession, Yuzu Omoi. This yuzu-infused Junmai sake is a little bit like sake and a lot a bit like the greatest limoncello martini you've ever had in your life. It's tart, it's sweet, it's refreshing, it's lovely. It's a little bit of heaven in a glass. Truly a must try for anyone craving a bright pop of citrus!
