Bring on the Ros!

Nothing gets us quite as excited as ros season. For years, ros wine was confused with white zinfandel, and people shunned it. But in recent years, as winemakers have put rejuvenated efforts into making interesting and delicious ros wines, the wine drinking community has responded by embracing the ros experience.

If you haven't revisited the idea of ros wine in a few years, consider stopping by The Urban Grape to pick up a bottle this month, or join us for our Ros grand tasting on May 7th. Ros is the perfect bridge between the heavier red wines of winter and the lightness we all feel as spring arrives. Starting this week and through the end of September, we plan on rotating over 50 ros wines through the store. The variety in these wines is amazing, and there truly is something for everyone.

We look forward to seeing you at UG this month, and hope you'll mark the weekend of June 11th on your calendar as we get ready to celebrate our one year anniversary with all of you!

Best,

TJ and Hadley Douglas, and the staff of The Urban Grape

Urban Tastings

Our weekly free tastings continue throughout the month, and will highlight our new spring inventory in beer, wine and liquor. Make sure to join us for a tasting, always held on Thursday and Friday nights from 5-8 and Saturdays from 2-5.

Below are a few event and tasting highlights for the upcoming month:

Tuesday, May 3rd: Are you among the 300 people headed to Temple Isreal's Cocktail Reception for Friends? Make sure to stop by our tasting table, where we'll be sampling a selection of spring wines.

Tuesday, May 3rd, 6 PM: Four tickets to our Ramey dinner were miraculously released earlier this week. This is your chance to meet David Ramey, sample five of his wines and feast on four courses from The Capital Grille. Tickets are $150, please call 617.928.1400 if you want to snag the last few seats!

Saturday, May 7th, 1-5 PM: Please note the extended tasting time for our Ros Grand Tasting! We'll pull the corks on 20 bottles of ros wine in the hopes of helping you find the perfect bottle.

Sunday, May 15th, 7-9 PM: Getting hitched? Don't know what booze to pour, to say nothing of how much booze you should buy? Join us for our Wedding Wines 101 Seminar where we'll cover everything from choosing glassware, to staying within your budget, to (most importantly) pouring great wine on your wedding day. Join us as we sample unique and inexpensive wines while nibbling on wedding worthy food from farm-to-table caterer, Seasons to Taste. RSVP required and we're keeping the evening intimate, so respond soon!

Thursday, May 19th, 6-9 PM: Join us at Healthworks in Chestnut Hill for an Open House in their Co-Ed Studio. We'll be doing a wine tasting, which should make working out even more fun!

Saturday, May 21st, 2-5 PM: Join local honey wine sensation Ian of Isaaks of Salem as he tastes UG's customers on his fantastic mead. Ian will be joined by Tina of Shy Brothers Farm in Westport, MA, as she samples their divine locally made cheeses. We're thrilled to present these two companies in our on-going commitment to highlighting local small businesses!

Sunday, May 22nd, 7-9 PM: This is one of the most exciting events that The Urban Grape has hosted since we opened. Join Sak Sommelier Nancy Cushman of O Ya as she leads us in an exclusive sak seminar. We'll taste six saks (a sparkling, a Junmai Daiginjo, a Junmai Gingo, a Junmai, a Nigori and an aged sak) while Nancy breaks down the confusing sak terminology in an easy-to-understand way. After the tasting, Nancy will stick around to help everyone choose the perfect bottle for their palette! RSVP required, a $25 donation for the Kiuchi Earthquake/Tsunami Relief Fund is requested.

Save the Date for the weekend of June 10/11/12! We'll be announcing a line-up of fun events as we celebrate our one year anniversary. And the whole weekend we'll be hosting a "Summer Stock" - a chance for our customers to load up on cases of wine for their summer vacation weeks at 20% off!

Spotlight Wine: 2009 Ruta 22 Malbec (Patagonia, Argentina)

Ruta

Not every Spotlight wine can be a First Growth. Sometimes, you just want to save some money on an amazing, reliable, delicious weeknight wine. This is one of those weeks.

The Ruta 22 wines are named after the main route used to travel East to West through Argentina. Patagonia's cool, dry climate and complex soils make it ideal for growing Malbec. This wine is no exception. Vanilla aromas with a lovely hint of floral abound, followed by a rich, smooth, blackberry flavor. This wine may be inexpensive, but it's finish is rich and gripping.

The Ruta 22 Malbec is a UG customer favorite. Snap it up this week at up to 25% off the regular price!

Regular Price: $13

15% Bottle Discount: $11.05

25% Case Discount: $132.60 (a $23.40 savings)

The Spotlight wine is available at this price until 10 AM, Thursday May 5th. Respond to this email or call the store at 617.232.4831 to reserve your order.

Tuesday Tweets

de forville

2009 De Forville Nebbiolo (Langhe, Piedmont)

This is a classic Nebbiolo. Its aromatic nose of wild cherry, tobacco and rose draws you in, while its nice acidity, soft tannins and fruit forwardness keep you coming back for more. Mushroom risotto, anyone?

Regular Price: $20

20% Bottle Discount: $16

macon pierreclos

2008 Macon Pierreclos Burgundy (Macon Villages)

Love Chardonnay, but hate oak? Then un-oaked French Burgundy is the answer. Delicious aromas of vanilla, baking spices, hazelnut finish with great fruit, acidity and minerality. Throw some shrimp on the barbie, or whip up a linguine with clam sauce to pair with this wine.

Regular Price: $18

20% Bottle Discount: $14.40

Urban Buzz

When we started The Urban Grape Blog, part of what we hoped to bring you was information about our wine related travels. We had visions of tasting updates from the vineyards in Napa, Italy, Argentina, France... Apparently we forgot that we had just opened a wine store and would be going nowhere but down Route 9 to Chestnut Hill.

Almost a year to the day after we opened UG, TJ and I are embarking on our first work trip together - to the iconic wine-producing country of...Ireland!

Okay, so we won't be tasting any wine, but we will be enjoying our share of Guinness and whiskey. We're headed to Slane Castle as the guests of Lord Henry Conyngham, the head of the Conyngham family and manufacturer of Slane Castle Irish Whiskey. We were invited to Ireland to see the distillery, tour the areas surrounding Slane Castle itself, and attend a historic Slane Castle concert featuring The Kings of Leon.

It may not be wine, but it's still exciting. We'll be taking lots of pictures and keeping you all updated on the fun we're having on our trip. So watch our blog and Twitter feed over Memorial Day weekend to join in the fun!
