Testicular Cancer Awareness Week: April 1 - 7
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) estimates 8,590 new cases of testicular cancer and 360 deaths in 2012.
Testicular cancer is the number one cancer killer of men in their 20's and 30's, but it can occur in older men as well. It is a highly treatable and usually curable type of cancer. More than 90% of testicular cancer patients are cured by their initial treatment, and many of those who have recurrent disease can also be cured with chemotherapy or radiation. Chemo and radiation can affect fertility, so patients should have opportunites for counseling on sperm banking upon diagnosis.
There are many good TC resources available, and also many organizations promoting awareness and offering support. Please take a moment to check the TC Quick Links to the left.
Almost all of the fertility clinics in RTL's Fertility Preservation Network offer sperm banking for cancer patients. Many of them offer free or discounted consultations and/or freezing and processing of semen for cancer patients through LiveSTRONG's Sharing Hope programs, or through programs of their own. ReproTech offers financial assistance for specimen storage though our Verna's Purse program.

Nat'l Young Adult Cancer Awareness Week April 2 - 8

Although 70,000 adolescents and young adults (AYA's; aged 15-39) are diagnosed with cancer annually, these patients are fighting to gain recognition as a group. These patients have unique medical, social, economic and developmental needs that must be addressed differently than younger or older patients.
A main concern affecting quality of life among young AYA cancer survivors is fertility. Although discussions regarding the possibility of infertility and methods to decrease the risk are crucial at the time of diagnosis, many AYA's don't remember having adequate discussions regarding these topics before the initiation of their treatment. Embryo cryopreservation in women and sperm cryopreservation in men before cancer therapy remain to be the most effective ways in which fertility is preserved in the AYA population. Oocyte (egg) cryopreservation, although still considered experimental, is rapidly emerging as another effective option for fertility preservation for AYA women.
With the help of organizations such as I'm too Young For This! and
SeventyK, AYA's are finally getting their voice heard!
