The Slow Reel (CD Release Party) with Carousel and Nik Westman and the Central Plains at the Brillobox

In the fall of 2008, Kentucky native Rob Collier began writing a new collection of songs inspired by the early 1970s recordings of Delaney & Bonnie, Leon Russell, and the Faces. In the waning days of 2009, Rob and longtime friend and collaborator Madison Stubblefield moved to Pittsburgh to put a band together to play these songs and quickly set to work recording and performing in their new city under the name Small Cities.

Small Cities' first full-length album, Jackson Purchase, was released June 2010. In August 2010 the band changed its name to the Slow Reel and began recording an album of all new material. Make sure you stop by Brillobox on June 11th to hear and buy the new album.

Lawrenceville Welcomes Two New Businesses

Salon Christine

Salon Christine

Salon Christine becomes the first and only green Aveda Concept Salon in Lawrenceville. The artsy and bohemian salon sitting fashionably on the corner of Hatfield and 49th Street is a direct reflection of owner Christine Goodis' extensive experience in the art and fashion worlds.

Spending many years studying at London sassoons, and working her way to a nomination as "Master Stylist" of Pittsburgh and a presidency of the Pittsburgh chapter of the Art and Fashion group, Goodis was ready to open her third salon. Since April of 2011, doors have been opened to both new and loyal clientele, many of whom have been around for 25 years.

Salon Christine is staffed with master colourists, using every sort of colour from basic touchups to balayage and dimensional glossing sheens, starting at $67. Customized haircuts are styled to the needs of each person, and like any spa of its caliber, waxing, threading, and nails are also available. Salon Christine also offers elaborate "experiences" where private parties can have the salon to themselves for five hours or have a photo session with a professional photographer. The salon is completely green, utilizing both plant and flower based color for all of its clients.

Goodis loves her new location, stating a supportive, growing neighborhood with a unique artistic flair as qualities that brought her to Lawrenceville.

"I wanted to walk and or ride my bicycle to work", says Goodis.

In addition to moving her business to the area, Goodis is also a new resident who is relishing her new spot. When asked what she thinks of the area, only one word would do.

"Fabulous", she says.

Salon Christine is located at 4900 Hatfield Street and is open Tuesday and Wednesday, 11:00am - 8:00pm, Thursday 12:00pm - 9:00pm, Friday 11:00am - 7:00pm. and Saturday 10:00am - 4:00 pm. Find out more at www.salonchristine.com

Love Bikes

Love BikesLove Bikes brings Lawrenceville its first bike repair shop, joining Bike PGH and Clankworks in an unofficial trio of bike-minded businesses. The 400-square foot shop nestled comfortably behind Arsenal Bowl perfectly suits the current needs of owner Nicholas Brungo, who has converted the space into part apartment, part bike haven. Attracted by the raw space and its potential, Brungo has spent the past 10 months renovating and renewing the spot, which opened its doors to patrons in April of this year.

Love Bikes specializes in servicing broken down bikes and equipment but also sells new and custom models, starting at $300 for new bikes and $900 for a custom bike, from the frame up. If everything goes according to plan, Brungo will also soon be offering custom made bikes fashioned from bamboo.

Since opening, Brungo has expressed hopes to host events with other biking businesses in the area like Bike Pittsburgh.

In choosing Lawrenceville, Brungo says the history of the area was one of his biggest pulls. As a native Pittsburgher with two generations of familial ties to Lawrenceville and plenty of friends here to sweeten the deal, it wasn't a hard decision. He was quick to note the ideal terrain as well.

"The area's flat and open, which makes it pretty perfect for biking"

Brungo is glad to have a hand in the revitalization of Lawrenceville, citing the deep history of the neighborhood as one of his favorite things about it.

"Because it used to be such a nice neighborhood, it's nice to be a part of the Renaissance of it all".

Love Bikes is located at 212 44th Street and open Tuesday-Saturday from 11:00am. to 6:00pm, and on Sunday 12:00pm- 5:00pm. Find out more at www.facebook.com/lovebikespgh
