Greetings!
WOW! Tobi got adopted for Christmas!! Makes me cry. I'm happy. Well, here we are at a whole new year. What, I say What? are you going to achieve this year? MORE LEARNING I hope! That's mine! Ever tell yourself, "I just want to be mediocre"? I sincerely doubt it.
Anyone say, "Yeah, I'd like to set myself up for some criticism"? And yet... the only way to be remarkable is to do just that. Down with mediocrity! Psssst... change the way you think. Most importantly... THINK! Don't just absorb your information like a paper towel absorbs a spill. Yeah, you knew I was going to use that again asap! :D Gotta check out the new "Jumping with the Herd" video here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgSglVevffc Taylor did a great job, (bareback with a halter) and we had a blast. This is a horse that came in 7 weeks ago. He sent his rider to the hospital courtesy of air-e vac because he kept bucking her off and refusing jumps. They told me he hated jumping, But, after a different approach, you can see he really loves to jump.
You know how when you're a passenger in a car and chatting with the driver, you get where you're going but you don't know how? If you're not paying attention, you don't know what's happening or how to do it or not do it, again.
Riding since she was a child, in her adult years Donna took lessons for close to 20 years, yet... what had been happening was an avoidance of the biggest issue she had going. Fear. That will translate into myriad horse issues - always. But, Donna decided she was going to tackle it, changing how she thinks about riding, herself and her horse and is currently in first place in AZ standings for ACTHA after her second place here with her Missouri Foxtrotter, Smokie. Great Job!

 So... Are You Horseman Material????
I was out riding in the desert hills with someone I'd known for many years, but we had never ridden together. I was on my ex-killer horse, Black Diamond, with only about 85 rides on her or so (you can check out Black's bio here). My friend was having trouble with her horse (who has quite a bit more training) so I suggested that we switch for a bit. Now, my friend has been taught how to Curbside a horse, has seen me do it on many occasions both with her horses and in seminars and word is she even read the book :D. However, when I climbed up on the boulder, her horse wasn't precise (actually he wasn't even near close, grrrr...), inclined or interested in the request, so I was quite clear about my request, intentions, the time frame and mind frame I had in mind. When my friend prepared to climb up on the huge boulder that we were using to mount, she did not just walk to the boulder to mount. She swung around leading Black so that they would 'end up' lined up with the rock. (Pg. 55 in the book says not to do this.) Plus, she still had the rein only about 18 inches or so from the bit and as she got up on the boulder... so did Black. Why? What was the difference? She did not give the horse the trust or opportunity to Curbside, hence the bad job her horse did when I went to mount him. She was leading my horse and since she was leading and got up on the boulder, Black followed. Think about it.
Please forward this newsletter to your friends and tell them to sign up for their own. There's a difference between techniques and technique. For exceptional results, think "how and how can I".
