Greetings!
Well, that Mustang I started back in May came in second at the Extreme Supreme Mustang Makeover two weeks ago in Fort Worth. You can check out how her first six days went here. "To be conscious that you are ignorant of the facts is a great step to knowledge." -- Benjamin Disraeli Those three 'D' words I mentioned last month? Desire, Dedication, Diligence. The most important word as far a being able to do something about it? Awareness. You must be aware of something to change, you must change to be aware. Most adults don't just run out into the street without checking traffic, but a little kid? without training? Yep! So, parents train their kids to be aware, check on things. A lot of people have desire. A lot of people desire more money or a bigger house or a really nicely behaved, gymnastisized great-looking horse. But... are they willing to dedicate time and effort and be diligent = constant effort to accomplish something; attentive and persistent in doing anything, done or pursued with persevering attention; characterized by steady, earnest, and energetic effort: painstaking, to achieve it? Ya know, if it comes quickly and easily there is no painstaking. No diligence necessary. This doesn't mean you won't have wonderfully fast results in some areas. Believe me, students are constantly surprised when I get them to do something they never thought would "go okay" and it turns out to be a moment of wonder. It's normal to want easy results, but it just isn't going to go that way all the time. Do you have the dedication and diligence to persevere? And way important, do you have the dedication and diligence to do it with a good attitude? "A winner is someone who recognizes his God-given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills and uses these skills to accomplish his goals." --Larry Bird That "Works his tail off" part is the kicker! |
So... Are You Horseman Material???? Just warming you up up there. I have a couple more things (okay lots but maybe later) about Dominance, Leadership, Control and Fear.
Xenophon says in 'On Horsemanship' - "As there will, doubtless, be times when the horse will need to race downhill and uphill and on sloping ground; times, also, when he will need to leap across an obstacle; or, take a flying leap from off a bank; or, jump down from a height, the rider must teach and train himself and his horse to meet all emergencies. In this way the two will have a chance of saving each the other, and may be expected to increase their usefulness." And to this I say, "Go thou and do likewise!" I currently have a horse in for training that is a bolter. Major lose your head in any circumstance ie: movement of any part of the rider, movement of any part the himself. Just spent more than a good hour working on him learning how to stop when I drop the reins. Desire, Dedication and Diligence.
"In the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins, not through strength but by perseverance." -- H. Jackson Brown Control and awareness of control or the lack thereof. - A large portion of riders think they want control so they aren't afraid. But, if analyzed by situation, they don't have any control and don't know it (awareness). And most sure as hell don't want someone pointing it out. :D Horses run off with riders pulling on the reins or with reins that were already short all the time. Reins don't equal control. Grey matter influence does.
There's a difference between techniques and technique. For exceptional results, think "how and how can I".
