In the spirit of the season, please accept my sincerest best wishes for a healthy and happy holiday. It is fitting at this time of year to express my gratitude for the team spirit among our parents, staff and community members.  The continued willingness to be supportive of our school initiatives has been the foundation of this district's success. To each of you, may the holidays bring a relaxing, meaningful time spent with family and friends and a wish for a special season filled with love, friendship, and contentment.

Holdrum's two robotics teams competed in the Bergen County Qualifying Tournament at Pascack Hills High School along with 26 other teams. The teams were judged on their robot design, teamwork, a research based presentation, and participated in a robot competition. The CyberHawks won first place for their presentation and came in 4th overall in the robot competition. robotics2

The RoboRavens won second place in teamwork and tied for 12th overall in the robot competition. Both teams were among the eight teams that advanced to the New Jersey State Championship Competition to be held on December 11th at Mt. Olive High School in Flanders, N.J.  Best of luck to both teams!

On Tuesday, November 23, 2010, Holdrum Middle School inducted 18 students to the National Junior Honor Society.  In order to be invited to apply to the NJHS a student must be in the top 15th percentile of their class. They then complete the application which includes Leadership, Community Service and other student activities. These traits are required by the National Junior Honor Society Charter.

There are currently 33 members in Holdrum's Junior Honor Society. They will continue to meet throughout the year, where they must continue to perform community service and maintain a strong academic average. The invited guests included family, faculty, principal of Holdrum Middle School, Mr. Gary J. Borges, Superintendent of Schools, Matthew J. Murphy, Ed. D., Mrs. Lorraine Waldes, President of the River Vale Board of Education and Mr. Steve Rosini, River Vale Board of Education Member, as well as the moderators Mrs. Rita Fasano and Mrs. Maureen Monaghan.

Staff Training utilizing Technology

The River Vale School District has recently implemented Online Training In-Service Seminars (OTIS).  Mandatory staff in-service trainings are now completed by staff at times which are convenient for them. This low cost method of mandated training will satisfy New Jersey requirements to maintain the District's compliance with QSAC.   It also eliminates the need for substitutes and related costs of registration and travel to send staff out of district for training.  Bottom line - OTIS keeps your child's teacher in the classroom and saves money at the same time.
