Habitat for Humanity Santa Cruz County Newsletter
April  2010
Greetings!

We have so much good news to share with you!

First, take a look at the Dawn Lane build. It is really moving along. We anticipate that it will be done this summer! For a construction update from our Construction Supervisor Danny Boyd click on the Video Update below on the right hand column.

Second, we are building in Scotts Valley! On March 17th, by unanimous vote, the Scotts Valley City Council approved up to $300,000 in Redevelopment funds for our Blake Lane project! We will be closing escrow soon to purchase the land for the 2-3 unit development, which when complete, will be purchased by selected families, with a preference to families living or working in Scotts Valley at 0% interest. "Scotts Valley's redevelopment agency has set aside 20 percent of its generated revenue for low-income housing since the 1990s. Currently, there is more than $3 million available for low-income housing that can only be spent to develop "affordable" homes in Scotts Valley," said the Scotts Valley Press Banner in a follow-up story. Many thanks to the Scotts Valley City Council for thier support of Habitat's new project. This new affordable housing is in line with the city's general plan Housing Element, which calls for about 100 additional affordable homes in Scotts Valley by 2014. We agree with Jim Reed, the Mayor of Scotts Valley when he said "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

Third, we have purchased an inclusionary property on Frederick Street as part of the EMIA Harbor Home Development located adjacent to Frederick Street Park. It will be a 3 bedroom single-family detached unit. Inclusionary units are a great way for HfHSCC to build low-income homes in Santa Cruz and, since we are the county's number one low-income developer, we are poised to meet the needs of development when it comes to inclusionary units. We plan on beginning the Frederick Street build in the next couple of months.

None of this would be possible without our community. The support continues to roll in. We have had a great response from sponsors contributing in-kind materials for our Dawn Lane home. Everyday, a new volunteer calls up to get involved in a build (the waiting list is LONG!), businesses and organizations sign up for a Community Build Day, donors send in checks for amounts as small as $5 or make an online contribution. Every dollar counts. Every in-kind contribution helps. Every person who steps up to be part of our community helps. You folks are the ones building Habitat Homes.

     Thanks to you all!

We have had an amazing response to our Community Builds. Avalon Bay, Sunrise Rotary and Rotaract, Home Depot and Wells Fargo have all been out to help with the Dawn Lane. Habitat Community Builds offer an opportunity to participate in the construction of a Santa Cruz Habitat Home, while contributing financially to the costs associated with the build. Thank you to all of the organizations, groups and businesses who have already stepped forward. You are forever a part of the Dawn Lane home!
Community Shout Out-Thank You In-Kind Contributors for Dawn Lane

It takes a community to build Habitat homes in Santa Cruz County, and that community provides three things: volunteer hours, financial contributions, and in-kind contributions. The in-kind response from our community for the build at Dawn Lane has been remarkable!

Volunteering for a build is not the only way you can support Habitat for Humanity Santa Cruz County. Every dollar we raise helps us help another family. The more cash we have, the more in-kind contributions of new building materials, and the more land that is donated, equates to your community building more Habitat homes for low-income families.
If you are an individual and are interested in volunteering, you can fill out the volunteer form on our website, or  email us at volunteer@habitatsc.org. The response from individuals who want to build has been tremendous, and there are so many people who want to build for Habitat that we currently have a waiting list for volunteers. Please do sign up-we will do our best to get you out to a build in the next few months.
