Go and Do Likewise   Special report
September 2011
Greetings!

This update is a special request for a hard working young man for whom the door of opportunity has opened.  Benard Mogute has been one of the most involved youth in the village of Rionchogu. He opted to do vocational training for his secondary education and has been in driving school.  Benard has been awarded the opportunity to attend a graduate course in Heavy Machinery which, when he completes the course, includes a job in construction involving this machinery.  This is a very great opportunity for a rural youth.  Here then is Benard's situation and our request.

In May of 2011 Benard received his certificate of commercial driving at the time of his successful completion of vocational training.  Because of his hard work and for other reasons companies use to identify potential employees, Benard was offered a heavy machinery training course as the next step to a job in heavy construction.  This is somewhat akin to degrees in education, you earn the chance but still must pay for the training or higher degree.

This course does require tuition and is held in Nairobi so Benard will need to secure housing and provide course fees prior to working on the job.  During this past summer Benard has been busy working to raise the funds and recently his family and the surrounding villages held a fund raiser to provide Benard the support he needs to complete his job preparation.  The cost of the year program is $1500.00 or Ksh 120,000During the fundraiser. Benard's family and neighbors raised  Ksh 68,000 and pledges of another Ksh 12,000 or a total of Ksh 80,000.

During the fundraiser Benard spoke of how he arrived at this point through opportunities available through GAD Kenya and placed many thanks on the support of GAD Kenya and his experience as a sponsored student.

In all this two things come to mind; first on my mind is the constant participation in all projects by Benard Mogute, when we built a house or made latrine slabs for elderly or spent time in seminars, when he was home from school, Benard was always there and one of the first faces you would see would be Benard, smiling; secondly when receiving this opportunity the first place of resource was work and family and friends.  GAD Kenya was not expected to be the "sole provider" Benard's family and community has stepped up and gathered around $1000.00 for his training.  For a very poor family and community, this is a giant step forward.  For us it is a milestone, there will be more, and with each a new opportunity.  For now, Benard is, in a very real way, an Icon of hope and proof that the cycle of poverty and illiteracy is breakable, the future is the outcome of personal effort and community support; the future is not manacled by the past.

The funds raised for Benard came up short of his needs, even with the pledges he is still short.  Due to this a request was made of GAD Kenya to assist with this final step in the education of Benard Mogute.  Ksh 40,000 is still needed, that is about  $500.00.   This is where you come in.

So I come to you to ask for some small help for this specific young man and his determination.
