Greetings!

Sometimes there is just no way to tell a story in a manner which carries the real message.  So it is with this trip.  If one does not believe there is a presence available when people or a person reach out to help another, an active presence, that is, which is determined to accomplish a purpose you are not aware of, then the events of April 2011 will never make any sense.  If in fact you do hold such belief of Spiritual presence, it is still practically impossible for me to say in words that which only personal experience can validate (even then with some uncertainty) as one might embrace the events.

April 2011 in a nut shell was amazing, invigorating, full of conflict and attacks, over whelming and just plain old awesome.  Yes, we come home and need a day or two to recuperate from the long final trek but even then it is so worth the time, effort and expense to go.  Among all the things I pray for, foremost is that you would travel someday with us.  Take a giant step into the unknown where there will be unease for the very destination we have.  Yes, you will ask yourself 'why am I doing this' but in the end you will know that you have been in the midst of encouraging, supporting and affecting change at a cultural and traditional level that is so profound and appealing that your own peace will say well done.

Say what I will, only you can take that step and experience a world you have never seen and real people who are taking charge of their lives for a new future.  A future they could not even imagine just a few years ago.

Library Dedication

It is finished, done, completed (and enlarged during construction to support future replacement of classrooms).  The three classrooms are occupied, the old end building has been demolished and we are hoping to raise the funds for the next stage of replacement buildings for the safety of the kids.

New library

Replacement classrooms and library under a shiny roof

Our Goal is to have a second building of two more classrooms finished this year and the final buildings replaced by mid summer of 2012.

The dedication was a fun day for the school, the teachers and others gathered.  Anastasia Hansel, widow of author Tim Hansel, cut the ribbon as the library was dedicated in part to his amazing life of joy and support.  Also commemorated in the dedication was Patti Dayton, another person who faced great physical and personal challenges yet rather than chose sorrow she chose joy also.  The lives of these two remind us that we are purposed to serve and bring joy and light to others.

Growing into their own, women in the village

Empowering women is essential for a growing and developing community.  Through group training and leadership experience the women of the village are taking a more and more strategic role in visioning the future.  For some it is more difficult as they have years of seeing themselves as secondary to the men, but change is coming and for the best result the women must be raised up and allowed to become an effective ingredient of change.  This is happening, small group gatherings brainstorm to find new ways to grow their personal economy and their individual personalities.
Next trip

September 14 is the target date for our next visit to the village.  As usual it will be focused as a short immersion in the culture and life of this rural Kenya village.  Prices are expected to be close to our normal and we can travel with or without the Maasai Experience.  It will depend on the travelers who decide to go.

I hope to hear from a few of you and continue to pray for your presence on our next trip.
