Gracias! Lots of Notes of Thanks that We Should Share ...
| Thanks to James Fisher for his gracious hospitality Sunday morning. We look forward to enjoying the hospitality of Hal and Gordon this Sunday.
(Coffee time hosts are posed on the CPC web calendar.)
Karen Kimmel and Marty Rosensweig thank the CPC community for the love and support offered in the days following the death of Karen's mom.
Thanks to all the generous folks at CPC who contributed $266 for the Souper Bowl of Caring. That money goes to AFAC, as part of our ongoing commitment to feed the hungry.

Celebrations & Concerns

We hold Karen Kimmel and Marty Rosensweig in the light as they grieve the death of Karen's mom, Mildred Kimmel, who died earlier last month. Mildred, who visited with us when she was in town, was 88 years old when she left the church militant for the church triumphant.
Please hold Barbara Allen in the light as she recovers from surgery. We give thanks that the procedure went well, and that Barbara was able to be with us in worship last week -- less than a fortnight after brain surgery!
Please hold in the light Andrea Haynes and her mother (and Michael and Celeste) as Andrea's mother recovers from a stay in hospital in St. Louis.
Ben Saferstein asks prayers for his friend, Holly, whose father died last week.

Wii Kirk Open for Fun
Progressive ... Inclusive ... Diverse | February 2012
|
Greetings!

The family that plays together stays together ... or something like that! But seriously, playing together is an important part of the life of any family and of any vibrant congregation. So come out and play this Friday evening at the Wii Kirk. The oven has been repaired, and the best pizza in Arlington County -- courtesy of Mr. & Ms. Pizza -- will start filling the space with delicious aromas soon after the doors open at 6:30 p.m. The big-screen TV and the Wii will be out, tables set for conversation, and a warm welcome awaiting you. So come on over, and bring a friend. Wii Kirk is on! peace, David |

Plant Your Rows Straight and Long! CPC Gets Garden Grant for 2012
Clarendon has been awarded an Arlington Community Garden grant of $776 to develop our Plot Against Hunger garden this year.
The grant will fund purchase of raised beds to increase the garden's capacity this year, and also to increase our composting capacity.
Food from the garden is contributed to the Arlington Food Assistance Center. Kudos to Gillian Burgess for taking on the extremely last-minute grant writing work.
The grant includes a session with the Virginia Ag Extension Service, Tuesday, Feb. 28, 9:00 a.m. - noon, at the Fairlington Community Center. If you are available to represent us that morning, please let me know.

Full House Feeds the Hungry
Clarendon turned out en masse Tuesday evening to serve meals to Arlington's street people. We had at least ten folks show up to serve. Way to go CPC!
We'll serve again Saturday, June 30.
In the meanwhile, mark your calendars for the third Monday of the month (Feb. 20) when we'll bag groceries for AFAC.

Speak Up for Children
State Senator Jeff McWaters (R-Virginia Beach) is pushing his so called "conscience clause" bill (SB 349) that would authorize licensed, state funded adoption and foster care agencies to discriminate in making adoption and foster care services available to children and prospective parents based on religious tenets or moral beliefs. People of Faith for Equality in Virginia encourages you to contact your state senator to express opposition to this bill.
SB 349 would allow adoption and foster care agencies based on their religious or moral beliefs to place GLBT youth in harmful homes. These youth could be required to stop attending GLBT support groups or, even worse, enrolled into "ex gay" reparative or conversion therapy.
The state's main focus should be acting in the best interests of children when placing them into loving and permanent homes, and this bill does nothing more than look out for the best interests of a few discriminatory agencies.
Click here to send your senator a letter through Equality Virginia.

| Clear Vision Requires Research: Kick Start it Sunday
As discussed at the January congregational meeting, Clarendon is working this winter on refocusing our congregational vision. This four-month project includes a research phase that involves talking with our neighbors and community organizations to asses needs and identify potential partners.
Sunday morning following worship, as we gather to share coffee and snacks, we'll kick-start the research phase. We gathered some excellent ideas about potential research "targets" last month. This weekend we want to do two things:
1. Clarify what information we seek. 2. Confirm your participation in the process by making commitments to conduct the research.
Please give some thought to this, and come Sunday morning prepared to advance this project as together we work to create a more vibrant congregation at Clarendon.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend this public witness for justice, and to stand with Ron and James as they stand on the side of love.

Staff Design Group Articulates Principles
CPC's staff design group continues its work, and will present an update to the congregation at Sunday's congregational meeting.
The group's work is being conducted in relationship to the broader visioning work of session and the congregation, and will proceed according to a set of broad goals and principles that emerged from the group's conversations and guidance from session.
To maintain and expand a vibrant congregation, the staff design group will ensure that staffing at Clarendon be designed to:- Ensure effective and efficient stewardship of the congregation's human, financial, and physical resources.
- Develop more diverse and interactive ministries, particularly with respect to music and Christian education.
- Facilitate better identification and harnessing of congregational time and talents.
- Complement the strengths of existing staff and lay leadership.
The group has reviewed data from National Capital Presbytery and from the broader Presbytery Church (U.S.A.) on staffing patterns of similar-size congregations, and will present those findings Sunday. Elders Travis Reindl, Karen Kimmel, and Gordon Hawthorne, and members Dave Norman and Grant Mandsager are serving on the staff design team.
