HELP Wanted & Needed!

We need a host for this Sunday. Can you do it? Let me know.

Celebrations & Concerns
We hold Karen Kimmel and Marty Rosensweig in the light as they grieve the death of Karen's mom, Mildred Kimmel, who died earlier this month. Mildred, who visited with us when she was in town, was 88 years old when she left the church militant for the church triumphant.

Please hold Barbara Allen in the light as she faces surgery.

Please hold in the light Andrea Haynes and her mother (and Michael and Celeste) as Andrea's mother recovers from a stay in hospital in St. Louis this week.

Come to the Lakeshore...
Progressive ... Inclusive ... Diverse

January. 2012
Greetings!
cpc rose window

The beginning of a new year is a good time for considering the great intersection of gifts and callings in each of our lives. In worship this month we have celebrated the ordination of new elders, listened to the story of the call of Samuel, and begun talking about our calling as a congregation.

This Sunday we continue this path, focusing in on the initial call story of the Gospels from Mark's gospel. Jesus goes to the lakeshore -- to that limit place where the water meets the land -- and there he meets his first followers to whom he utters the famous and enigmatic invitation, "follow me and I will make you fishers of people."

The beginning of a new year invite us to listen again for Jesus calling us. What does he ask of us? What does it mean to follow him today? With whom are we called to share the good news that he proclaimed: the kingdom of God is in our midst!

These questions are central for us as we seek new ways to be a more vibrant congregation.

Join us in worship this weekend. The Rev. Walter Green will be preaching, and together we will proclaim good news!

Come and see.

peace,

 David

PS: Plan now to attend the January 29 congregational meeting and potluck brunch as together we chart a path toward a more vibrant congregation.
Presbytery Considers CPC Marriage Overture

rainbowWhen it meets Tuesday afternoon, National Capital Presbytery will consider an overture from the session at CPC that asks the denomination's General Assembly to issue a statement next summer declaring, in essence, that pastors who officiate at same-gender weddings in jurisdictions where same-gender marriage is legal will not place themselves in ecclesiastical jeopardy. The Clarendon overture asks NCP to concur with an overture passed last fall by the Presbytery of East Iowa that seeks an authoritative interpretation from the General Assembly.

The overture is pages 18-19 of the Presbytery packet. The discussion and vote will take place a little after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Please hold the Presbytery in your prayers as we consider this witness for justice.
It's Not the Last Chance ... But It Would Sure Help Now

It's never too late to support the ministry at CPC with your time, talent and treasure, but it the time to make a pledge for the 2012 budget is right now. Session will finalize the budget at its meeting Sunday, and it is incredibly helpful to our congregational planning to have a reasonably accurate estimate of your giving.

We have big plans as together we build a more vibrant congregation at CPC in 2012. Worship renewal. Mission outreach into the community. Spiritual growth. Witness for justice and peace. Joyful song. Reaching out to new friends with the good news that God loves us all.

Session has included $85,000 in the budget for pledges. As of today, we're about $12,000 short of that goal.

We trust that God will provide for each of us and for all of us. There is no clearer sign of our faithfulness that our generosity. Send us a note right now letting us know your plans for giving for 2012.

Thanks so much for all that you do for the ministry at CPC.
