Gracias! Lots of Notes of Thanks that We Should Share ...
| Thanks to everyone who helped make the Christmas season at CPC shine!
HELP Wanted & Needed! It's time to pack away the shine of the season, so please plan to stay after worship this Sunday as we de-deck the halls.
Also, we've come to the end of the coffee time sign ups. We'll have a sign up sheet at worship Sunday, but if we're to have more than that we need a host for this Sunday. Can you do it? Let me know.

Celebrations & Concerns
| We hold Karen Kimmel and Marty Rosensweig in the light as they grieve the death of Karen's mom, Mildred Kimmel, who died last Friday. Mildred, who visited with us when she was in town, was 88 years old when she left the church militant for the church triumphant.

Let a New Thing Happen!
Progressive ... Inclusive ... Diverse | January. 2012
|
Greetings!
The new year is a good time for recalling the promises of God in Isaiah: See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them.
From the beginning of time, God has been about the business of doing new things and a new year brings with it an invitation to look for signs of the new things that God is doing in our lives.
Where do you see signs of newness, of renewal, of new beginnings in your own life? How will you respond to the new things you experience? How do you practice an openness to the new things God is doing in and through you?
As we begin a year that holds the promise of great change at Clarendon, where do you see God doing new things in our midst?
In Isaiah, God says, "behold, I am about to do a new thing! Do you not see it?" God is not finished making all things new. Let us, together as God's church, be open to the new things God is doing, and may we, together, be instruments of God's renewing peace in the world in 2012. PS: One small new thing that I'll call to your attention: a new table of contents box called "In this issue ..." debuts today in the upper left corner. You can use it to click directly into articles below.
PPS: Please hold session in your prayers this Saturday as we gather for our annual January planning retreat. We'll be considering the new things God is calling us into, and being supported by your prayers as we work is powerful. |

Start the Year With Wii Kirk!
This Friday, January 6, join us for the first Wii Kirk evening of pizza and games. Festivities begin at 6:30. Drop in any time. Bring anything you'd like to share with pizza. The Wii will be on, and Mr. & Mrs. Pizza will be warming the kirk with the wonderful smell of fresh-baked pizza!
It's always a great time, and it's a particularly good time to bring friends.
Come out and play!

You're Invited to Worship Renewal!
In case you've missed it, we are anticipating significant change in the life of the congregation during the coming year. We will ground every step of the way in our worship, and we will also experience changes in that worship along the way.
This Saturday, January 7, from 9:30 a.m. til 12:30 p.m., our friends at Church of the Pilgrims in DC are hosting a morning for worship renewal in the progressive church.
Sara Miles and Paul Fromberg of St. Gregory of Nyssa in San Francisco will explore how worship and service are parts of a unified whole and how we need to explore what worship is for and not just what we do.
Liturgy involves everything we do: how we sing, how the chairs are arranged, how we welcome visitors, how we feed our neighbors, how we pray, how we organize committees. Liturgical values express our theology, they say something about what we believe God is doing and what we believe the relationship between God and God's people is like. This workshop is about unearthing the theologies that underpin our worship and finding ways to express them in liturgy.
The Revs. Peg True and John Green (parish associates at CPC) are planning to attend, and that's wonderful! It would be even more wonderful to have some lay participation from CPC. "Liturgy" literally means "the work of the people." Laity -- the people -- are the ones who do the work of liturgy, so having you at this workshop will be incredibly valuable to us all as we consider together the new ways God is calling us to work together at Clarendon. If you would like to attend, please let me know.

Rethinking Church: Local Mini-Conference at Vienna
The Transformation Team of National Capital Presbytery invites you to a free two-day event examining ways to reach people in the community and to launch NCP's Acts 16:5 Initiative. Vienna Presbyterian hosts the mini-conference Tuesday and Wednesday, January 17-18, from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. each day. It's free, and includes lunch!
The Acts 16:5 Initiative invites congregations of all sizes to engage in a deliberate process of congregational transformation that is both communal and missional - serving both the congregation and its surrounding community and world.
David will be attending both days of the Vienna event, and would love some company from CPC. If you are interested, let me know.
