Greetings!
O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. There are all kinds of connections within the songs we sing. O Little Town of Bethlehem, for example, was written by a graduate of Virginia Seminary in Alexandria, Phillip Brooks. Brooks was one of the best-known preachers of the 19th century, and was known for his outspoken advocacy for emancipation of the slaves. Brooks wrote O Little Town of Bethlehem following a Christmas journey to the Holy Land, about which he wrote, "I remember standing in the old church in Bethlehem, close to the spot where Jesus was born, when the whole church was ringing hour after hour with splendid hymns of praise to God, how again and again it seemed as if I could hear voices I knew well, telling each other of the Wonderful Night of the Savior's birth." The music was written by the church musician of Brook's congregation, Lewis Redner. It came to him on Christmas Eve, 1868, and the hymn was first sung the following day. We'll sing this and other songs of the season this weekend at our candle light service, Christmas Eve, at 7:30, and again Christmas Day, at 11:00 a.m. Come and worship! PS: This is the final e-blast of 2011! We'll gather at 11:00 a.m. on New Year's Day for worship. The church office will be closed next week, and I will be on vacation. Have a safe and grace-filled holiday. |

Stewardship Season Update; We're Getting Closer And We're Going Electronic ... soon
As of December 18, we have received 22 pledges totaling $59,172, toward a 2012 goal of $85,000. It's an excellent start, and we give a huge thanks to every one who has responded to the invitation to make a financial commitment to the mission and ministry at Clarendon.
Make your pledge today! It helps so much as we make try to finalize the budget for 2012.
Coming Soon-ish: Electronic Giving
Many of you have asked about electronic giving to CPC. It's an option we've wanted to provide for quite a while, and now the company that designed and hosts our web site is preparing to introduce an electronic giving feature that will work seamlessly through the web site.
As further information becomes available we'll share it, and if the product works the way its developers tell us it should we'll make it available to you as quickly as possible.
The developers say it should be ready in "early 2012." These are, however, web developers, and they seem to run on cyber-time!
